PREPARATION

Sides will be provided at the audition. Actors may perform a side or a brief contemporary monologue.
Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS: Living a stagnant, unhappy existence in rural California, the struggling Tate family is desperate for change, but every family member has a different way of trying to improve their station in life.
SEEKING:
WESLEY
White male, (18+ actor to play) 18. Weston and Ella’s son. Trying to hold his home together through the family’s poverty and strife, and carrying the weight of that. Watchful, angry, hard-headed, afraid. Perceives and is deeply affected by all.
EMMA
White female, (18+ actor to play) 13. Weston and Ella’s daughter, 4-H member. Fiery, smart, tough, with big dreams and a serious mouth on her.
WESTON
White male, 40s-50s. A big, prideful man and raging alcoholic, mercurial, with a volcanic temper. Can’t hold a job, in debt up to his ears. Feels the world against him, and he deserves more.
ELLIS / and AS CAST
Male, 50s, any ethnicity. Owner of the Alibi Club, Weston’s regular bar. Burly, with tattoos, jewelry and shiny, tight clothes. A businessman and a brute. Also plays EMERSON or SLATER, one of two sadistic men who come to collect on Weston’s debts. Open to all ethnicities, actively seeking diverse actors from all communities.
SERGEANT MALCOLM
Female, 28-30. A sergeant in the California highway patrol. Open to all ethnicities, actively seeking Latina and Asian actresses.

White male, 40s-60s. Ella’s lawyer and lover who is helping her sell the family’s house. A creepy man with questionable intentions. Also plays EMERSON or SLATER, one of two sadistic men who come to collect on Weston’s debts. Role is CAST.
ELLA
White female, 40s-50s. Wife of an alcoholic, desperate to escape him and their hardscrabble life for anything better. No nonsense, a fighter, at the end of her rope. (Role CAST)
