BREAKDOWN

Synopsis
In the wake of an elementary school shooting in his hometown of Raleigh, NC, a
Republican U.S. senator makes an off-the-cuff comment to a blogger that not only calls into question the senator's stance on guns, but also his belief in God -- three days before his bid for re-election. As his devoutly Christian wife and liberal Jewish campaign manager try to contain the damage, this look at how religion, guns, and social media influence our political system is simultaneously funny, honest, heartbreaking, and uplifting.

Note: For any role that has been CAST, actors may be considered for possible replacement should any become needed.

SENATOR CHARLES CHARLIE WHITMORE (R - NC):
(CAST – ROB NAGLE) Male. 40s-50s. Born and raised in North Carolina, he is a former State Senator, now incumbent Junior U.S. Senator, up for re-election. His father was Governor of NC for many years before he died. His two older brothers are Congressmen in NC. Though not gunning for it himself, the party is grooming Charlie for a Presidential run in a few years. Charlie is a man filled with doubt. But he has plenty of charisma and sex appeal. He's a rare honest politician and gifted public speaker. Must have impeccable comic timing.

SARA WHITMORE:
Female. 40s. Charlie's wife. Former real estate agent, now stay-at-home mom to their boys MATTHEW and LUKE (9 and 6). Sara is the undisputed boss of the household. More street smart than book smart but can hold her own with the big boys. Also born and raised in North Carolina, she loves her family, Jesus and the Bible. She's a tough southern woman with a hard exterior and soft underbelly. At the heart of this play is the real love, respect and affection Charlie and Sara have for each other. Chemistry and charm are a must. SARA is attractive and put-together, but she’s no trophy wife. She is not Melania; she’s more like the late Elizabeth Edwards or a younger, curvier Tipper Gore. (Think Delta Burke from Designing Women or the actress Katy Mixon.) Must have impeccable comic timing.

ALEX KLEIN:
Female. 30s-40s. Charlie's campaign manager. A fast-talking, no nonsense liberal Jew from New York whose star is on the rise as a go-to campaign manager. She successfully defeated 5 different Congressional incumbents in the last 3 election cycles, but this is her first Senate race. Hired by the Whitmore campaign so she wouldn't defeat him working for the other side. She is great at her job, but knows her career is on the line if this election goes badly. Her self-doubt bubbles to the surface at times, but she's clearly a professional at the top of her game. Must have impeccable comic timing.

TOM / MARSHALL / SECURITY GUY:
Ethnic Male. 20s-30s. An NC State graduate and North Carolina boy through-and-through. Tom is a paid intern with the campaign. Simple with a good heart. Eager to please and in awe of Senator Whitmore. He’s more country, while Marshall is more of a southern gentleman. Marshall is a blogger with Christian values but not much journalistic experience. Security Guy is a typical non-speaking bodyguard. Must have impeccable comic timing.

Female Understudy
One multi layered comedic actress to cover both Alex and Sarah. Caucasian. Mid 30’s – 40’s.

Male understudy
Multi layered comedic actor to play The Senator (40s-50s) and Tom/ Marshall/ Security Guy (20s-30s). Male, any ethnicity. Someone who has a timeless, versatile look is ideal as covering characters who are different age ranges.
