Breakdown
LORT SEASON
HARMONY Book/Lyrics: Bruce Sussman, Music: Barry Manilow Dir: Tony Speciale
All principals are 21 to 27 years old at theonset of the play.
About: HARMONY tells the story of the Comedian Harmonists: an internationally famous, all-male German close harmony ensemble that performed between 1928 and 1934 as one of the most successful musical groups in Europe before WWII.
PRINCIPALS
“Rabbi” Josef Roman Cykowski The Narrator. A devout Jew. Polish émigré, speech is colored with Yiddish inflection. Wise, truthful, self-deprecating. A peacemaker. Wide Vocal Range. Baritone to A natural. The vocal sound of Eddie Fisher, Vic Damone
Harry Frommerman A self-taught genius. Rare passion and vision. Founder of the Comedian Harmonists, his prospects in life are not great, so he focuses all of his energy on the group. Talks fast, thinks fast, moves fast. Dark haired. Disheveled. An assimilated German Jew. Baritone.
Bobby Biberti Chooses words carefully. Shrewd, smart, opinionated, sensible. Speaks the truth. Explosions are few but volcanic. Operatic in size (tall & thick in stature) and style – can be an abrasive, yet is likeable. Commanding, competitive. A proud German. Had he not joined the group he would have likely been a young Nazi in training. A true comic on stage. Seeking a true Bass (Opera background a plus)
Erich Collin Well-bred, sophisticated. He wears a monocle. Immense vocabulary and range of knowledge – some might say pretentious. An entitled man of manners, Erich is a rich kid who sees the world differently than the others. Mysterious and full of secrets. Side-splittingly funny when performing on stage. Second Tenor. Vocal sound of Frankie Valli, Andy Williams, Michael Crawford.
Chopin (Erwin “Chopin” Bootz) A virtuoso pianist and singer. Devilishly handsome. Slick. A street kid who made a name for himself. Earthy and direct. Aryan looking (ideally blonde). A self-promoter who is sometimes shallow. Baritone with a large high range. Vocal sound of Josh Grobin, Michael Buble.
Lesh (Ari Leshnikoff) Charmingly innocent. Exuberant, expressive, animated, a near-childlike enthusiasm for life. Without pretense. Somewhat of a womanizer. High Tenor. Must have a strong falsetto. (Opera background a plus) Vocal sound of Mandy Patinkin, Art Garfunkel, Andrea Bocelli.
Mary Hegel Rabbi’s fiancée and eventual wife. Beautiful blond. Sensible, thoughtful. Supportive, but free-thinking and independent. Self-Assured. Soprano. Vocal sound of Barbara Cook.
Ruth Stern A gorgeous, dark-haired woman of great passion for many causes and equally great emotional volatility. A courageous Jew – almost to a fault. Marries Chopin. High belter. Vocal sound of Lainie Kazan, Barbra Streisand (The Way We Were).
ENSEMBLE: A Singing/Dancing Ensemble of Seven Men, Three Woman who play various roles including:
Fritz Kruger A nightclub owner. No-nonsense. A business man not easily swayed.
Ezra Kaplan The owner of Berlin's swankiest nightclub. A show-biz veteran. Amusing. Something of an impresario.
Albert Einstein. The one and only.
Standartenfuhrer A colonel in the SS and a fan of the group's. Sophisticated, well-educated, almost courtly.
Ingrid Standartenfuhrer's elegant and devoted wife.
Obersturmfuhrer A lieutenant in the SS. Matter-of-fact. A loyal, unquestioning follower.
Richard Staruss The composer. Gaunt, severe, but distinguished and worldly.
Sandor Frankenhauser A stressed-out film director.
Marlene Dietrich at the dawn of her career
