BREAKDOWN
Based on the novel by master storyteller Margaret Atwood and inspired by real-life events, this new stage adaptation tells the story of Grace Marks, imprisoned for life in 1843 for committing one of the most notorious murders in history. Grace, however, has sworn she has no memory of the events. Fifteen years later, psychologist Simon Jordan begins interviewing Grace to gradually unlock her memories.
SEEKING:
GRACE MARKS (Female, early 30s) Grace has been convicted of murdering Nancy Montgomery and Thomas Kinnear but has amnesia of the events in question. She was imprisoned for her crimes when she was just sixteen and has been incarcerated for fifteen years. She is allowed to work in the daytime as a chamber maid in the home of Mrs. Lavell. Small and slight with porcelain skin, Grace is ethereal, almost timeless, and able to move fluidly in and out of memories as her story unfolds. Speaks with a slight Irish lilt.
MARY WHITNEY (Female, 18+ to play 16) Grace's close friend from her first service position in the Alderman Parkinson home. Mary is endlessly cheerful and outspoken, wise beyond her years. She gets “in trouble” at a young age, and her subsequent death haunts Grace forever.
JEREMIAH/JEROME DUPONT, (Male. 40s) Jeremiah is a peddler, cheerful and honest. He lives by his wits and looks out for Grace. Dr. Jerome DuPont is a clean-cut “medical” practitioner, a hypnotist of the era. It is unclear whether he is a serious doctor or a charlatan. Only Grace knows that Jeremiah and DuPont are actually the same man.
