BREAKDOWN

THESEUS/OBERON
Male. 40s. Any ethnicity. An actor with equal parts suave sophistication and bad-boy danger to play both THESEUS, Duke of Athens, authoritative, smart, sexy and a little undone by his love for Hippolyta. His usual buttoned-down and controlled demeanor is starting to unravel, and OBERON, King of the Fairies, demanding and powerful. He wants what he wants when he wants it.
HIPPOLYTA/TITANIA
Female. 40s. Any ethnicity. An actress with enormous charm, power, and wit. To play HIPPOLYTA, Theseus’ bride. She is complex, sexy, intuitive, and powerful. And TITANIA, the Queen of the Fairies. She is intense and moody and very much in control of her own desires and needs. Fiercely protective of her own.

PUCK
Male or female. Any age. Any ethnicity. Master of the Revels and primary troublemaker. An enchanting, mischievous fairy who delights in playing pranks on mortals. Must be very dynamic, great with language, dangerous, wicked, energized.
HERMIA
Female. 20s. Any ethnicity. Daughter of Egeus. Fun, sexy, energetic. Attractive, but in an offbeat way. Quick-witted and physically bold. She has a toughness under a sweet veneer. An impetuous young woman who is desperate to get out from under her father’s rule and start living her own life.
HELENA
Female. 20s. Any ethnicity. Hermia’s best friend and devoted to her. Fiery and sexy but a little odd too. A great comic role for a physically bold risk-taking actor. She is a slightly anxious young woman, who disguises her insecurities behind a razor-sharp wit.
LYSANDER
Male. 20s. Any ethnicity. In love with Hermia. Sexy, funny, a little self-absorbed but full of willful impulses, quick to act, stubborn, sweet. Must be funny, a physical comedian as well as great with language. A little rough-around-the-edges. A bad boy.
DEMETRIUS
Male. 20s. Any ethnicity. Also in love with Hermia. A bit smoother than Lysander, but also has a sexy cruel streak. Aggressive, witty, exciting. He’s used to getting his own way, a bit privileged. Also a physical comedian, dynamic. A spoiled but fabulous kid.
EGEUS
Male. 50s. Any ethnicity. Hermia’s father. Old-fashioned, furious, tense, powerful. Loves his daughter but hasn’t realized that she’s not a little girl anymore.
NICK BOTTOM
Male. 40s-50s. Any ethnicity. The overconfident weaver chosen to play Pyramus in the craftsmen’s play for Theseus’ marriage celebration. Enthusiastic. Wants to play all the roles. Likes to overact. A role for a character actor who is equal parts masterfully comedic and with classical chops.
PETER QUINCE
Male. 40s-50s. Any ethnicity. A carpenter and nominal leader of the craftsmen’s attempt to put on a play for Theseus’ marriage celebration. Playwright for the amateurs, he often gets shoved aside by his abundantly confidant actor, Bottom.
FRANCIS FLUTE the Bellows Mender
Young man. Any ethnicity. Chosen to play Thisbe, a young girl in love. He points out that he is just getting his facial hair. He thinks this will make playing Thisbe a problem, but this is actually why he was chosen. Slow to the punch.
ROBIN STARVELING the Tailor
Male or Female. 30s-50s. Any ethnicity. Chosen to play Thisbe’s mother, ends up playing the part of The Moon. Has a bit of a hard time remembering their lines.
SNUG the Joiner
Male or Female. 20s-50s. Any ethnicity. “I am slow of study”. Forget about remembering, they’ve got a hard time learning his lines so plays The Lion who need only roar. Snug worries that this roaring will frighten the ladies in the audience.
TOM SNOUT the Tinker
Male or Female. 30s -50s. Any ethnicity. Originally chosen to play Pyramus’ father in the craftsmen’s play. Literal minded - a bit concrete. Guess what…ends up playing The Wall.
