20s-30s – Handsome, athletic, and confident. Marvin’s lover.

TRINA (Mezzo)
30s – ex-wife to Marvin, mother to Jason. Charmingly neurotic. Now married to her ex-husband’s psychiatrist. Soprano/Belt.

MENDEL (Bari-tenor)
30s-40s - Marvin’s psychiatrist. Married to Trina.

JASON (Tenor/Alto)
13. Marvin’s and Trina’s son – smart and very concerned about his impending Bar Mitzvah, and grappling with his parents’ divorce and while trying to understand his father’s new relationship with WHIZZER.

CHARLOTTE (Alto/Mezzo)
30s - A dedicated doctor alarmed by the mysterious illness that is killing her gay male patients. Tough, but extremely nurturing and very much in love with her partner, Cordelia.

CORDELIA: (Mezzo/Belter)
30s – Dr. Charlotte’s partner who runs her own kosher catering business. A home maker but passionate about making a contribution to the world.

MARVIN The role of MARVIN is pre-cast.
(Bari-Tenor) 30s. Ex-husband to Trina and father to Jason. Charming, Smart and Charismatic. Torn between the traditional family he thought he always wanted and his new life with Whizzer.

FLORENCE (Mezzo/Belter)
20s-30s. Freddie’s chess 2nd, extremely smart and motivated. Will not be pushed around, torn between her commitment to Freddie and her feelings for Anatoly.

FREDDIE (High Tenor)
20s-30s. American Chess Champion. Extremely talented yet a very tortured soul. A once in a lifetime chess player. Loosely based on Bobbie Fisher.

ANATOLY (Bari-Tenor)
30s. Russian chess champion. Very measured and focused player. Passionate about both chess and his country, but not at all political. Fed up with the Russian political machine and its use of him as a weapon of the cold war.

MOLOKOV (Bass)
40s-50s. Intense, Russian bureaucrat who continuously reminds Anatoly that this is much more than just a chess game, this is war between two nations. Very smart and conniving, with a great sense of the political implications of each move he makes.

SVETLANA (Mezzo/Belter)
30s. Anatoly’s wife. Stoic and subdued. Very strong in her own right. A dramatic contrast to Florence.

ARBITER (High Tenor)
30s. Host/Referee of the chess tournament. A showman with a quick temper and very strict when it comes to the rules of the game. Always aware that he is in the spotlight and in charge.

WALTER (Baritone)
30s-40s. American Marketing expert and representative of Freddie’s television sponsor. He is there to keep Freddie in check and make as much money as possible for his company.

YITZHAK (High Tenor/Mezzo/Belter)
20s-30s. Hedwig’s husband, they have a very submissive and controlling relationship. Although Yitzhak dreams of performing as woman, they have given it up because of their love for Hedwig.

HEDWIG
The role of HEDWIG is pre-cast. (Tenor) Late 30s – 40s. Formerly Hansel Schmidt, becomes Hedwig and has a botched sex change operation to get married and escape communist East Berlin. Becomes rock singer and front woman of The Angry Inch. Glamorous, funny and a true rock star.
