SISTER ACT: THE MUSICAL Comes to Wayne State

The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present "Sister Act: The Musical", April 13 through 22, 2018. This reimagining of the classic film features music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors). This exciting new musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be a found: a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Bringing her talents to the convent, Deloris transforms the choir turning them into a new sensation, unfortunately blowing her cover in the process. Luckily through the power of music and sisterhood Deloris and her newfound family come out on top.

Director Michael J Barnes is looking forward to bringing this modern classic to the Bonstelle stage. "I believe that that the best part of directing Sister Act is re-discovering pure joy. Deloris's entry into the nuns' lives brings them newfound joy toward expressing their faith. In turn, Deloris discovers the importance of making heartfelt connections with people around her. Living in the convent, she learns that sisterhood and love can outweigh any need for stardom and the material world. In a time when it feels that there is more dividing us than uniting us, it's nice to be reminded that love and human connection can make a difference in our lives."

"Sister Act: The Musical" is filled with powerful gospel and disco-inspired music. It's a story that's equal parts outrageous and touching. "Sister Act: The Musical" is sure to leave audiences delighted.
