The official Beach Boys (not to be confused with the currently touring trio of Beach Boy originals BrIan Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks) comes to Freedom Hill August 2. The official group is led by founding member Mike Love along with Bruce Johnston, who has been a member of The Beach Boys since 1965; also touring as the official group are Christian Love, Randell Kirsch, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill and Scott Totten.

Mike Love owns the name "Beach Boys" and collaborated with BrIan Wilson on many of their hits. Love was primary lyricist on singles including "Fun, Fun, Fun", "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations". Love's notable leads in the early to mid-1960s include "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Be True to Your School", "Little Saint Nick", "Fun, Fun, Fun", "I Get Around", "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)", "California Girls" and "That's Not Me".

In 1988, The Beach Boys had a US number 1 hit with "Kokomo", the only Number 1 the band achieved without BrIan Wilson's involvement. Mike Love (along with "Kokomo" co-writers Scott McKenzie, Terry Melcher, and John Phillips) was nominated for a Golden Globe Award (1988) in the Original Song category, and was also nominated for a Grammy Award for "Kokomo". That same year, The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Freedom Hill offers a wide variety of summer concert entertainment. One of the first performers this season was Randy Travis, the wildly popular C&W artist. Travis performed here just days before he fell victim to a heart virus and suffered a stroke in Texas. The concert was absolutely wonderful, and I was thrilled I had the opportunity to be part of it. [Update 7/31/2013 7pm : Randy Travis has been discharged from Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano, Texas. Mr. Travis has been relocated to a physical therapy facility.]
