Casa Valentina in Broadway CASA VALENTINA
Town Hall Arts Center
1/11-2/3/2019
Written by Harvey Fierstein Directed by Nick Sugar Nestled in the Catskills—1962’s land of dirty dancing and Borscht Belt comedy—an inconspicuous bungalow colony catered to a very special clientele: heterosexual men who delighted in dressing and acting as women. These white-collar professionals would discreetly escape their families to spend the weekends safely inhabiting their chosen female alter-egos. But given the opportunity to share their secret lives with the world, the members of this sorority had to decide whether the freedom gained by openness was worth the risk of personal ruin. Based on real events and infused with Fierstein’s (La Cage aux Folles, Newsies and Kinky Boots) trademark wit, this moving, insightful, and delightfully entertaining work offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of “self-made women” as they search for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden. SUGGESTED RATING: “R” FOR STRONG LANGUAGE AND ADULT SITUATIONS

Hooded or Being Black for Dummies in Broadway HOODED OR BEING BLACK FOR DUMMIES
Aurora Fox Arts Center
1/18-2/10/2019
By Tearrance Arvelle ChisholmDirected by Betty HartJan. 18 Feb. 10The Aurora Fox Arts Center presents a dark and timely comedy the Washington Post says produces the kind of laughs that have a wow underneath as the characters stride onto dangerous turf. Hooded is an irreverent and darkly-comedic examination of two very different 14-year-old black boys growing up in America. Marquis, a book smart prep-school kid from suburban Maryland meets Tru, a street savvy Baltimorean when they find themselves sharing a jailhouse holding cell, before Marquis' uptight and very white adoptive mother comes to spring them out. Tru thinks Marquis has lost his blackness and pens a manual entitled Being Black for Dummies to help him navigate a world of cheerleaders, Black Lives Matter, 2Pac, Nietzsche, and the Gods Apollo & Dionysus each of whom end up vying for Marquis future. Colorado favorite, and True West Award winner, Betty Hart, directs this exciting and timely regional premiere.
