THE LITTLE MERMAID
Segerstrom Hall
2/8-2/10/2013
Under the leadership of John Neumeier, director and chief choreographer since 1973, Hamburg Ballet has established itself as one of the most exquisite dance companies in the world. Inspired by the scope of Neumeier's theatrical style-filled with movement, music and visual imagery-the dancers of Hamburg Ballet gracefully and powerfully bring the emotional and physical essence of his production to life. Hamburg Ballet's current retelling of The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837, is a fantastical and dark tale that contrasts a fanciful underwater world with the complexities of life on terra firma. The story is revealed through the tribulations of a young woman who risks everything for love.

Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, who would write the scores for Ragtime and Seussical, exploded on the musical theatre scene in 1988 with their first off-Broadway show, Lucky Stiff, a zany, offbeat, very funny murder mystery farce complete with slamming doors, mistaken identities, six million dollars in diamonds, and a corpse in a wheelchair. It won the prestigious Richard Rodgers Production Award for new musicals. Mild-mannered shoe clerk Harry Witherspoon stands to inherit six million dollars if he can successfully take the corpse of his late uncle on vacation to Monte Carlo for a week, but he isn't the only one who wants the money.
