BWW Review: 2017 OSU 4 Miler - The Biggest and Best 'Damn Race in the Land' for the Fifth Year
Once again, a sold-out field of 15,000 runners and walkers came out to celebrate football and fitness with the the largest four mile organized event in the country -- the 5th annual Ohio State Four Miler that finished on the 50 yard line of the Ohio Stadium.
Buckeye greats who also participated included Jacoby Boren, Zach Boren, Terence Dials, Bobby Carpenter, Ryan Miller, Scoonie Penn, Anthony Schlegel, J.J. Sullinger and Justin Zwick. Brutus Buckeye also came out to celebrate fitness and raise money for the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer and the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research. This year, special guest and Utica High School grad, Senior Master Sergeant Jeremy Mitchell, was also in attendance, who coordinated a Shadow Run for 50 soldiers last year at Ahmed Al Jaber Air Base in Kuwait. And any big Columbus sports event couldn't get started without fan favorite Leo Welsh leading off with the National Anthem ("Leo!") -- a big treat for all!
There were no excuses as bright blue skies, no wind, and perfect temperatures made for an absolutely glorious running day in Columbus, Ohio. With strict adherence to the corral system, the race featured ten wave start times to eliminate runner congestion and maximize enjoyment for participants of all ages and abilities. This system has been perfected throughout the years and has allowed more runners and walkers to participate safely.
The course featured a four-mile tour of the Ohio State campus, then through the tunnel of the 'Shoe' and onto the field to finish on the 50 while your video streamed live on the Jumbotron. Buckeye greats were also on the field posing for pics and giving high-fives as you crossed the finish line. A dream come true for true Buckeye fans! For friends and family members, they were allowed in the South Stands to take pictures, watch you "Finish On The 50" and celebrate your accomplishments.
The post race tailgate party featured vendor booths, music, food and fun, including games, prizes, obstacle courses, football tosses and other activities. Swag this year included a Buckeye-themed gender specific technical race shirt, entry to the tailgate party, and an awesome finisher's medal which featured Script Ohio from "The Best Damn Band In The Land."
New this year (and limited to 1,000 people) was your chance to participate in a Virtual Run by logging in your four miles on October 22 from wherever you are. Event coordinators would then ship your Official Event Shirt and Official Finisher's Medal approximately two weeks after the race. Although you'd get the great swag from the event, you'd miss out on the highlight of the race, which is obviously to finish on the 50.
No great event could ever be accomplished without the help from volunteers, who gave countless hours and smiles to ensure that everything ran like precise clockwork, from packet pickup at DSW, to pre-race logistics, to handing out water along the course, to presenting finisher's medals, to post-race party and tear down, and everything in between.
A fantastic event and another huge success, the fifth annual OSU 4 Miler is not only the biggest four mile organized event in the country, but it's definitely "The Best Damn Race in the Land," bringing together a community of enthusiastic Buckeye fans for a day to celebrate fitness, mingle with former OSU athletes, and be a part of history by finishing on the 50 yard line of the OSU stadium.
