Costume Shop Manager - Colorado Shakespeare Festival

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, a professional theatre company in residence at the University of Colorado Boulder, seeks a highly organized and experienced individual to serve as Costume Shop Manager. This is a part-time position December through April, which becomes full-time and on-site in Boulder May through August. Applications are being accepted now through October 31, 2019.



Offsite (part time) : December 1, 2019 – May 11, 2019

Onsite (full time): May 12, 2020 – August 16, 2020



Under the direction of the Production Manager, the Costume Shop Manager works closely with CSF leadership to facilitate design development and implementation for a 4-show summer repertory season. Key responsibilities include: Establishing and maintaining material and labor budgets; collaborating with costume designers; hiring costume shop personnel; supervising and coordinating all costume shop operations; ensuring all costumes, crafts, and wigs for all productions are completed in a timely and fiscally responsible fashion. Applicant must have significant professional experience, strong organizational and communication skills and a positive, collaborative attitude.



Colorado Shakespeare Festival produces 4 shows per seasons in 2 venues on campus. Costume designs are realized through a combination of built pieces, stock pieces, and some rental pieces.



Specific Duties Include:

Active participation in preseason production and design meetings

Advising the production manager and CSF leadership on design feasibility in relation to budgets, labor, scope, and scale.

Working with designers to determine built pieces versus stock and rental pieces

Creating material and labor budgets for each show and working within those budgets

Hiring all costume staff for the 2020 season

Overseeing all day-to-day shop activities including personnel scheduling, equipment maintenance, supplies inventory, organization of workroom and costume storage areas

Facilitating communication between the costume shop and other CSF departments

Maintaining standards in accordance with AEA contractual requirements

Actively participating in the preparation and construction of every production

What we require:

Candidates will have an MFA in Costume Design/Technology OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Costume Design/Technology with equivalent professional experience. In all cases, the experience should include 3-4 years of supervisory experience with the following knowledge and skills acquired: understanding of the costume design, crafts, wardrobe and wig processes; costume construction and alteration including contemporary and period patterning and draping; costume history; knowledge of fabrics and materials, their individual qualities, characteristics and suppliers; and working knowledge of domestic and industrial sewing machines and other applicable equipment.

What we’d like you to have:

Teaching experience a plus, but not a requirement.
