In 1996, HAN Zaifen came to Huangshan with the production team of The Merchant of Huizhou Love. She was fascinated by Huizhou’s ancient dwellings that were built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, such as the tall memorial archways, exquisite wharf walls and deep alleys. HAN can’t help but think about many other things: This land had given birth to many Huizhou merchants, and beautiful, touching stories that have taken place in the mysterious ancient courtyards.

CHEN hopes to present the ancient dwellings, women and stories of Huizhou on the Huangmei Opera stage. She invited CHEN Xinyi and LIU Yuncheng to the Xidi Ancient Town many times to collect folk materials. Later CHEN composed a touching story about a beautiful and kindhearted woman of Huizhou spending all her life waiting for her husband far away from home. Finally, she created a drama of four acts including the Wedding, Waiting, Chanting and Return. After eight years of writing, modification and polishing, a manuscript was finalized. On November 20th, 1998, a production team was set up for Huizhou Women. On the second day after the Spring Festival of 1999, the production team started a closed rehearsal. In June 1999, the drama was premiered in Hefei.

Since its premiere 17 years ago, the classic Huangmei Opera commission Huizhou Women has gained popularity from the audience at home and abroad. A novel creative technique is applied to the drama. Different from the regular Huangmei Opera, which is small-sized, light and comic, Huizhou Women is big sized, sorrowful and thought-provoking.
