Then Courtly meets horse-riding virago Lady Gay Spanker, who enters in her leather-trimmed hunting suit wielding a riding crop, and goes on to complicate the already romantic entanglements of the play. This comedy by Irish playwright Dion Boucicault was first produced in 1841, and was a bridge between Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s comedies of manners from the late 18th Century to the late 19th Century comedies of Oscar Wilde, who was influenced by London Assurance. It has remained popular ever since. City Lit’s production will the play’s first in Chicago since 1897. Cameron Feagin will play Lady Gay Spanker, and Kingsley Day will play Sir Harcourt Courtly.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in Broadway THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
The Hemmens Cultural Center
7/14-7/23/2017
Elgin Summer Theatre (EST) presents THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE which will run at The Hemmens Cultural Center July 14 - 16 and July 21 - 23, 2017. This Tony-Award winning musical has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor as it follows a group of eccentric adolescents in their quest for 1st prize in the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. The Elgin production of SPELLING BEE is directed by Terry Broeker, new to EST this year. Past EST performances include Hair, Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Annie, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent, BroadwayWorld Chicago Award Nominee Next to Normal, and A Chorus Line. Show times are 8 pm July 14, 15, 21 and 22, with 3 pm matinees on July 16 and 23.

THE NANCE
The Broadway, Pride Arts Center
6/29-7/30/2017
Beane’s play recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque's heyday and tells the backstage story of a gay performer, Chauncey Miles, whose role in the burlesque show was to brazenly exploit gay stereotypes of the time in a most suggestive manner.  Chauncey's uproarious antics on the stage at a time when it was easy to play gay on stage stand in marked contrast to his offstage life, where the “gay lifestyle” had to be lived clandestinely. The New York Times called The Nance “A heartfelt new play set in the twilight of burlesque." It ran on Broadway in 2013 starring Nathan Lane as Chauncey Miles and was nominated for five Tony Awards, winning two.

Triassic Parq in Broadway TRIASSIC PARQ
Circle Theatre
7/14-8/13/2017
Triassic Parq by Marshall Pailet, Bryce Norbitz and Steve Wargo vividly brings together music, sex and singing dinosaurs in ways hitherto unimagined. Chaos is unleashed upon the not-so-prehistoric world when one dinosaur in a clan of females spontaneously turns male. The mutation spawns a chain reaction of identity crises, forcing the dinosaurs to question the very facts of life they've held as truth. Triassic Parq is an unflinching musical meditation on faith, science and love. Also, you know...DINOSAURS.
