Deacon Blues Featuring Grammy Winner Howard Levy in Broadway DEACON BLUES FEATURING GRAMMY WINNER HOWARD LEVY
Metropolis Performing Arts Centre
4/28-4/28/2017
America's Premier Steely Dan Tribute honors Fagen & Becker with an amazing replication. Deacon Blues consists of eleven stellar musicians, composers, and educators based in Chicago. They share a unique passion for the Becker/Fagen repository, better known to the world as Steely Dan. Deacon Blues has structured their live repertoire to encompass a wider range of the Dan's prolific material - including rarities as well as repertoire from the Dan's 1991 reunion prototype — The New York Rock and Soul Revue. As the song goes . . . "Close your eyes, and you'll be there." In the words of legendary Chicago FM Radio personality Bob Stroud (WDRV-FM "The Drive") - "If you are a Dan fan, you owe it to yourself to see Deacon Blues — they've got all the right musicians with all the right chops — they are an incredible tribute to the music of Steely Dan!" Celia and Henry are teenaged siblings living in a Midwestern suburb who both become romantically interested in the same boy - their new next-door neighbor John. This isn't the first time Celia and Henry have been romantic rivals. Will trouble strike again as the two vie for John's affections? Meanwhile, Celia and Henry's parents, David and Louise, face stress in their marriage due to David's reduction in hours as a college professor and need to take on a job as a short order cook in an all-night diner. This world premiere by the promising new playwright Sarah Sander is a warm and frequently funny look at family life in a world where all the rules have changed.

Hairspray in Broadway HAIRSPRAY
Windy City Music Theatre
4/8-4/30/2017
Chicago - Windy City Music Theatre, one of Chicago’s fastest-growing professional theatre companies, will present HAIRSPRAY, with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray, April 8th-30th in Jefferson Park. ABOUT THE SHOW: The 1950’s are out and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do! ABOUT OUR MAINSTAGE SHOWS: Our MAINSTAGE Shows are fully-produced, big family musicals performed by professional actors, teens and youth. These two-hour productions are designed to appeal to our “for and by all ages” philosophy. Audiences who have enjoyed past MainStage shows remark that the shows are uplifting, inspiring, and fun for the whole family – not to mention more economical than larger venues. HAIRSPRAY includes auditioned and non-auditioned youth & teen ensemble and supporting characters, training alongside professional adults and performing in the shows. Directed by Jordan Richardson | Music Direction by Nick Arceo | Choreography by Joseph Kuchey

3/10-5/7/2017
Tony, a middle-aged Napa Valley vintner who makes a mail-order marriage proposal to Rosabella. She accepts the proposal on the mistaken assumption that the photo Tony sent along is of Tony, when it is in fact a picture of the young and handsome farm foreman Joe. It’s a touching love story that has been popular first as a non-musical play and feature film and as this musical filled with sweeping ballads, intense dramatic arias and tuneful, splashy Broadway-style numbers.

Unseen. Unheard. Unknown. At the margins of society, on the knife-edge of survival, they work for low wages, in harsh conditions. No safety net. No insurance or protections. No guarantee of work tomorrow. This critically-acclaimed piece, most recently produced at the UK’s National Theatre, is re-imagined for Chicago by writer/director Alexander Zeldin. In association with Dark Harbor Stories, a company led by Ensemble Member David Schwimmer and Tom Hodges, this play is a gritty portrait of those who cling precariously to the bottom rung of the ladder. Full of life, humor, and tenderness, it sheds light on America’s shadow economy and shines an unflinching spotlight on the incendiary intersection of race and class.

World Premiere Choreographer: Alexander Ekman | Music: TBA Celebrated around the globe for his originality and humor, Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman brings his unique cinematic vision to the Joffrey. “An inspired joker and true man of the theater,” says the Chicago Sun-Times. The Miraculous Mandarin Choreographer: Yuri Possokhov | Music: Béla Bartók Master of invention and Joffrey favorite Yuri Possokhov brings wild imagination to Bartók’s dramatic post-World War I tableau. Dubbed “reliably unpredictable” by the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Ballet resident choreographer never fails to delight — and stun — with his storytelling. Chicago Premiere Mammatus Choreographer: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa | Music: Michael Gordon Renowned for her improvisational skill, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa returns to the Joffrey with her spellbinding depiction of a turbulent cloud formation. “Sexy in an ambient way, embodying the impersonal attractions and repulsions that drive nature’s never-ending churn,” says Chicago Tribune.

THE LIAR
Athenaeum Theatre
4/21-5/27/2017
The Liar tells the story of Dorante, a young man newly arrived in Paris who wastes no time beginning his search for love and adventure, primarily through the spinning of extremely tall tales. As his tangled web of deception gets more and more complex and difficult to maintain, Ives uses Corneille’s text to explore the layers of seeming and identity that we weave around ourselves to get through the day. Promethean’s production will be designed to get the engine of farce at the heart of the play humming along smoothly, with sharp and precise language and sincere but high stakes performances, so that the audience can sit back and revel in the joyful chaos of the play.

Forty-Two Stories is a comedy about life in a high-rise condominium building where a professional student from the University of Chicago is moonlighting as a janitor, a stressed-out apartment manager is at odds with the residents and on the edge of a nervous breakdown, and a motley assortment of other staff members struggle with survival in the face of urban pandemonium and the possibility that one of them might be breaking into the units and stealing women's underwear.

An updating and mash-up of characters, plot devices and themes from Chekhov’s four major plays. Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia, named for characters from Chekhov plays by their late professor parents, are living in the family home now owned by their actress sister Masha, who pays the bills. When Masha arrives with her latest lover, a much younger and handsome, though dimwitted, actor Spike, conflict begins. Later another interloper arrives – the young actress Nina, who attracts Spike’s interest and incites jealousy in Masha.

NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES
Raven Theatre

When rules are unjust, we need to break them. This early play by Tennessee Williams is the story, based on real events, of a prison in which inmates fight back against the oppression of a physically abusive and even murderous warden. Written in 1938 and rediscovered in the late 1990's when it was revived in London and on Broadway, Not About Nightingales shows signs of the genius Williams would later prove to be.
