The PiTCH provides a forum for musicals in their earliest stages of development. Each musical creation team is provided with a week-long residency at the Festival. At the end of each week, the creative team ‘pitches’ their material to audiences with a presentation lasting approximately an hour long. Afterward, the audience and creative team engage in active dialogue about the piece and the process.

Week 1: Rio
Abandoned orphan Pipio has come to Rio de Janeiro to find his mother but falls in with the local drug lord Samson. Neves, a beautiful and compassionate Carioca and her boss, the wealthy Andreas, intervene to save him. Taking place during the colorful excitement of Carnival, this sung-through Brazilian take on Oliver Twist is played out against the pulsing samba street funk and the lush, vibrant backdrop of the ‘Marvelous City.’ It is and epic fueled by the continuous rhythm that drives these people to survive in one of the most beautiful yet dangerous places on earth – a world of contrasts and contradictions, of deep love of culture and hope.

Set in the elite Elsinore Boarding School, deep in the forests of Denmark, the characters are teens struggling with the ecstasy and agony of first love, addiction, obsession, grief and growing up. Shy art scholar Ophelia finds it hard to fit in, so her world is turned upside down when she falls in love eith the handsome head boy, Hamlet, and gets caught up in his revenge drama. OPHELIA re-imagines on of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and asks the question: can love drive you mad?

Based on the famous novel by Lucy M. Montgomery, which has sold over 50 million copies and been translated into 36 languages, Anne of Green Gables tells the story of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to live with Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, unmarried siblings, on their family farm, Green Gables. She in an imaginative, excitable, fiercely independent, opinionated, stubborn, loving, dramatic, unintentionally hilarious girl – who’s constantly getting herself into trouble. With a score that blends folk-rock, pop, gospel, and musical theater styles; and a script that grapples with questions of family, friendship, and the bittersweet trials of adolescence, this new musical version Anne of Green Gables is the classic story with a contemporary twist.

Inspired by one of the most violent skirmishes in American history, Devil’s Kin tells the tale of the Hatfield & McCoy feud and focuses on the mothers and daughters of these infamous families. We follow Roseanna McCoy, who longs for a life of learning, far from the inebriating violence the men of Tug Valley perpetuate. After a chance encounter the ingrained beliefs both families hold dear. With a score rooted in Americana folk, Devil’s Kin is a provocative examination of love and loyalty that asks: What is stronger, love or blood?
