Netflix released its third-quarter 2013 financial results today and announced it now boasts 40 million subscribers worldwide, up from less than 30 million just one year ago. Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings, Chief Financial Officer David Wells and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos participated in a live video interview this afternoon, and you can watch it below!

The rise in subscriptions could be due to Netflix's popular and most-watched original series ever Orange is the New Black, as well as House of Cards -- the first Internet TV series to win a Primetime Emmy Award. In its letter to shareholders, Netflix discusses its forward-looking focus on the "creation of some of the most compelling and remarkable content ever produced."

Aside from Orange is the New Black, Netflix launched the new Ricky Gervais series Derek and will be debuting comedy specials from Russell Peters and AZIZ ANSARI this and next month. An original series directed at teens, Mako Mermaids, also released its second series of episodes in quarter three. Netflix is also looking to expand into original documentaries. All of this will be part of their aim to double their investment in original content in 2014.

Netflix's letter concluded: "We have done well but we have a long way to go to match HBO's 114 million global member count or their well-deserved Emmy award leadership. Title by title, device by device, member by member, award by award, country by country, we are making progress."

You can read the letter in its entirety on Netflix's website.
