Now Maher continues to open up about the incident, stating that his slip was less of a 'race thing' and more of a 'comedy thing.' He also defended Kathy Griffin who was recently reprimanded for a joke that 'crossed the line.'

Maher says, "As much as I hate Trump... that's wrong. You don't do that to whoever the president is, but she was going for a laugh, and I understand that. We do sometimes cross the line." He continued, saying that Griffin's career is in no way over. "Kathy Griffin should not go away."

Maher headlined his first special in 1989 and has starred in ten HBO solo specials to date. He is also an executive producer of the innovative news magazine show "VICE," which is now in its fifth season on HBO.
