The Broad Stage Announces 2018/19 Season Isabella Rossellini's Link Link Circus, 7 Fingers' RÉVERSIBLE, The Reduced Shakespeare Company, Manual Cinema's Memento Mori; acclaimed jazz & blues artists Madeleine Peyroux, John Beasley, Billy Childs, The Stanley Clarke Band, Etienne Charles, Freddy Cole, Corey Harris & Guy Davis and the return of Hiromi: Solo; classical artists Vox Luminis, Olga Kern, Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Jeremy Denk, Lucia Micarelli; an Artist-in-Residence Series featuring violist Richard O'Neill; eclectic world artists Nobunto, Kinan Azmeh CityBand, Alash, Ranky Tanky and the return of David Broza; Kybele Dance Theater, Ballet Hispánico; diverse family programming featuring Pacifíco Dance Company, Aaron Nigel Smith's Family Reggae Bash, and The Story Pirates; plus partnerships with Sotheby's Institute of Art - Los Angeles, KCRW, Red Hen Press and National Geographic Live are among over 40 attractions announced for the 2018-2019 Eli & Edythe Broad Stage at The Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center season.

Executive Director Jane Deknatel said, "With our 10th Anniversary season behind us, we are looking forward to celebrating again with great artists who have been among our favorite. We are presenting the return of 7 Fingers, which was a huge hit in 2016 with Cuisine & Confessions. We've also brought back Stanley Clarke Band, the master of electric bass that blew our patrons away with his talent and commitment to fostering new artists as well as the breathtaking jazz pianist, Hiromi, in a solo program. Richard O'Neill, the gifted violist who last performed at The Broad Stage in 2017, will have the opportunity to do a deep dive into his music with a three-performance residency and audience favorite, Impro Theatre, will return with a run of their critically acclaimed Jane Austen UnScripted."

Deknatel continues, "In addition to bringing artists from all over the world, we're also presenting local artists who contribute directly to the richness of Los Angeles' cultural landscape. John Beasley, a Venice-based jazz musician will bring his MONK'estra to our venue to pay tribute to the great Thelonious Monk, and local musician jazz and classical artist, Billy Childs, will perform with his jazz chamber ensemble. Right in our backyard is Turkish-born choreographer Seda Aybay, who teaches at Santa Monica College. Her company, Kybele Dance Theater, will have their Broad Stage debut this fall."

This season's theatre offerings include legendary Isabella Rossellini's Link Link Circus, co-starring her dog Pan, which explores new scientific discoveries about animal minds, intelligence and emotions (January 25 - 27). The Reduced Shakespeare Company will create a new fast-paced Shakespeare play with William Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play (abridged) (April 5 & 6). Innovative theater company Manuel Cinema presents Mementos Mori, an ambitious show with musicians, puppeteers and cinematic storytelling and a lively meditation on death and dying (April 12 - 14). During the holidays, The Broad Stage will present All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 a dramatic re-telling of the astounding moment in history when Allied and German forces laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas together (December 22).

The Broad Stage sustains its legacy of bringing the best jazz & blues artists to its stage with singer/songwriter and guitarist Madeleine Peyroux playing songs from her new release Anthem (September 21), John Beasley and his 15-piece big band MONK'estra, capturing the spirit of Thelonius Monk (October 12), multi-GRAMMY winner Billy Childs and his Jazz Chamber Ensemble (November 11), the return of the prolific acoustic and electric bass legend Stanley Clarke (January 19), trumpeter Etienne Charles explores Trinidadian culture just in time for Mardi Gras with Carnival: The Sound of a People (March 2), pianist and singer, Freddy Cole, plays tribute to his brother Nat King Cole on the eve of his brother's 100th birthday (March 16, 2019), two leading ambassadors of acoustic blues, Corey Harris and Guy Davis (September 28), and one of The Broad Stage's most popular jazz artists, Hiromi, returns for a solo program (April 28).

The Reverend Shawn Amos will host blackbox @ the edye featuring up-and-coming jazz & blues artists in The Broad Stage's intimate second space. The line-up includes The Reverend Shawn Amos (September 7), Billy Valentine (November 2), Mudbug Brass Band (March 1), Jennifer Keith Quartet (April 5) and Gabrielito (May 3), with future artists to be announced.

The Broad Stage will present an array of diverse classical programs celebrating the power of voice, piano and viola. Vox Luminis, a Belgian early-music ensemble, performs this rare art form (October 11). Russian -American pianist Olga Kern plays a program from Scarlatti and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff and Scriabin (February 9). One of the world's greatest chamber orchestras, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, celebrates their 60th anniversary with pianist Jeremy Denk (March 9). Korean-American violist Richard O'Neill will be The Broad Stage's artist-in-residence with three programs featuring the Ehnes Quartet, Steven Lin, and local musicians (September 8, March 3, May 26). Beethoven, Bagels & Banter, the popular classical music series in The Edye, continues with music curated by Robert Davidovici (September 23, October 21, November 18, January 13, February 17, April 7).

Lucia Micarelli, violinist, has been a featured soloist, performing with a wide variety of artists from Josh Groban to Chris Botti to Jethro Tull. She will perform an evening of music that ranges from classical, to jazz to traditional fiddle music to Americana - creating a distinct musical map (October 26).

Five eclectic concerts from all points on the globe include Nobunto with a fusion of Zimbabwean-rooted music, Afrojazz and gospel (November 10), Syrian composer Kinan Azmeh with CityBand (February 7), Alash, a trio of master throat singers from Tuva (March 8), Ranky Tanky performing the timeless music of Gullah culture (April 7) and the return of The Broad Stage favorite, Israeli artist David Broza (December 15).

Kybele Dance Theater, led by Turkish-born director/choreographer Seda Aybay, will have their Broad Stage debut (September 14). The 7 Fingers returns after their wildly-successful Cuisine & Confessions with RÉVERSIBLE, a riveting mix of dance, circus, theater, music and acrobatics (February 15 - 17). The premiere Latino dance organization in the United States, Ballet Hispánico, will celebrate Latino culture through dance (March 22 & 23).

This season, The Broad Stage continues to deepen connections with local organizations through an Arts & Lectures series, aimed at fostering discussion and community involvement surrounding the arts. Upcoming partnerships include four evenings of poetry with Red Hen Press (July 22, December 9, February 10, April 28), KCRW's Left, Right & Center (September 20) and the return of ARTISTS TALK co-presented with Sotheby's Institute of Art - Los Angeles (Date TBD).

Broad Stage favorites, Impro Theatre, will return with a run of their critically acclaimed Jane Austen UnScripted (December 14 - 23) for which it won an Ovation Award for "Best Presented Production" in 2016. The Los Angeles Times said, "Impro Theatre has evolved into a powerhouse improvisational company in full-length shows that are off-the-cuff and consistently hilarious. An indigenous Los Angeles treasure, the company should be seen - and reseen!"

Family programming will provide an opportunity for audiences of all-ages to enjoy The Broad Stage. Pacífico Dance Company, dedicated to the preservation of traditional Mexican dance will perform Mexico, de Tierra a Mar, a dance fusion extravaganza (October 20). Aaron Nigel Smith, critically acclaimed reggae artist will encourage the whole family to sing, dance and play together with his Family Reggae Bash (February 23). The Story Pirates return with This Show is Missing! an interactive show celebrating the release of their latest book (March 30).

The Broad Stage's partnership with National Geographic continues with Nat Geo Live presenting four programs: Social by Nature with photographer, Ronan Donavan (October 4 & 5), Into the Arctic Kingdom with photographer, Florian Schulz (December 13 & 14), Point of No Return with mountaineer, Hilaree Nelson O'Neill (February 28 & March 1) and Wild Seas, Secret Shores with photographer, Thomas Peschak (April 25 & 26).

The legendary Isabella Rossellini and her dog, Pan, take to the stage to address the newest scientific discoveries about animal minds, intelligence and emotions. Isabella will transform herself into Aristotle, René Descartes, a medieval theologian, Harvard Professor F.S. Skinner and Charles Darwin, all discussing the essence of human beings and what distinguishes us from the "brutes."

Manuel Cinema's Mementos Mori

Mementos Mori is a lively, beguiling meditation on death and dying. In Manual Cinema's most ambitious show to date, a cast of six puppeteers use hundreds of paper puppets, seven overhead projectors, two cameras and three screens to create a live "movie" in front of the audience. Accompanied by four musicians and live sound effects, the result is a rich mosaic of cinematic storytelling, all performed live with puppets.

All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 recounts an astounding moment in history when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas together, sharing food and drink, playing soccer, singing carols and burying each other's dead. In some places along the Western Front the truce lasted a single night and in others it endured until New Year's Day. This dramatic re-telling weaves together firsthand accounts by 30 World War I soldiers with music including patriotic tunes, trench songs and Christmas carols.
