Scoop: 20/20 on ABC - Friday, May 12, 2017He’s one of the most famous names in software—a name that’s emblazoned on many computer screens. John McAfee, who was named a “person of interest” by authorities in the murder of his neighbor in Belize, sits down with “20/20.” In 2012, when Belize authorities tried to question McAfee about the death of American Greg Faull, he went underground and fled to Guatemala. ABC News Correspondent Matt Gutman has been reporting on this story from the beginning, first tracking McAfee down in Guatemala, and then in Miami, after he was deported to the United States. Over four years later, Gutman meets with McAfee at his home in Tennessee to discuss his tumultuous past and current life, including new allegations raised in the Showtime documentary “Gringo,” which alleges he paid to have Faull murdered. The hour also includes interviews with Eileen Keeney, Faull’s mother; Janice McAfee, McAfee’s wife; and Nanette Burstein, “Gringo” filmmaker. “20/20” airs on FRIDAY, MAY 12 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.

After the financial crash in 2009, McAfee decided to move to Belize. Faull claimed the dogs McAfee owned were a threat, and Faull was found dead the day after he allegedly poisoned them. McAfee claims that the Belize government was after him, because he would not pay bribes, and that Faull’s murder was somehow part of that plot. “20/20” has reached out to the Belize government for comment. Last year, “Gringo” featured an interview with Cassian Chavarria, the caretaker of McAfee’s property, who claimed that McAfee hired a hit man to kill Faull. Later, Chavarria retracted his statements. Burstein claims that McAfee paid him to retract his statements while McAfee claims Burstein paid Chavarria to make false statements in her documentary. Burstein and McAfee each deny making any such payments, although Burstein says she paid some participants for photos, and McAfee denies any involvement in Faull’s death.

McAfee ran to become the Libertarian party candidate for president in the 2016 Election, but finished as the runner-up. He is also re-entering the cyber security industry, creating new products including what he claims to be the first cellphone that can’t be hacked.

“20/20” is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
