ROMEO AND JULIET Return to DC For Annual Free For All

Free For All, one of the capital's cherished annual traditions, will return this summer to Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), offering two weeks of free performances of the Company's 2016 production of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Directed by STC Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul, whose hit production of Camelot has extended through July 8 due to popular demand, the production will run at Sidney Harman Hall (610 F St NW) from August 21-September 2, providing more than 12,000 people the chance to see the play free of charge.

The Free For All production will see some familiar faces return to reprise their roles: Jeffrey Carlson (Mercutio), who was honored with the Emery Battis Award for his original performance; Elan Zafir (Sampson); and Gregory Wooddell, who will this time play Montague. Longtime DC favorite E. Faye Butler will make her STC debut as the Nurse, as will Danaya Esperanza in the role of Juliet. Sam Lilja, who will play Romeo, returns to STC after appearing as Florizel in 2013's The Winter's Tale.

STC Artistic Director Michael Kahn said: "Since 1991 my vision for Free For All has been to make the works of Shakespeare accessible to everyone. I'm delighted to welcome back Alan's bold production of Romeo & Juliet. His contemporary setting embraces the play's youthful energy and was particularly compelling to younger audiences, many of whom were seeing their very first Shakespeare play. They recognized the longing, turmoil and restlessness of the young people on stage, and I hope audiences can have that experience again this summer."

In Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare presents a world about to combust, saturated with passionate love and powerful hate. Caught tragically between two feuding families, alike in dignity and in enmity, Shakespeare's immortal young lovers try to fashion a new world amid the violence of the old, but cataclysmic choices and tragic twists propel them toward a final confrontation with fate.

"One of the reasons I staged the play in modern dress is that I want the audience to walk in the theatre and see themselves on stage," said Alan Paul. "I want teenagers to see their experiences and emotions reflected in a really powerful way, which is sometimes difficult when characters are in period costume. If you look at the dysfunction of the Capulet family in modern day, it becomes a family dynamic that people really understand."

Romeo & Juliet's bold, modern set features work from designers with an impressive portfolio of national, regional and international work. Scenic Designer Dane Laffrey's credits include the current Broadway revival of Once On This Island for which he received a Tony Award Nomination, the acclaimed Deaf West revival of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's Spring Awakening and the Broadway premiere of Sam Shepard's Fool for Love. Costume Designer Kaye Voyce returns to STC after working with the Company on The Merry Wives of Windsor and Twelfth Night. Lighting Designer Jen Schriever's Broadway credits include John Leguizamo's Ghetto Klown and off-Broadway credits include Mala Hierba and American Hero. Choreographer Eric Sean Fogel's work has been featured on television, and in theatre and opera houses around the world, and Fight Choreographer David Leong returns regularly to STC and worked on the Company's first production of Romeo & Juliet in 1986.
