Gallery Crawl in Pittsburgh's Cultural District Set for Tonight

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the next Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District, downtown Pittsburgh, will take place tonight, July 10, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. CrawlAfterDark events begin at 10:00pm at venues throughout the Cultural District. The Gallery Crawl is held quarterly and is free and open to the public.

The crawl showcases thought-provoking works by award-winning artists, one of a kind visual arts exhibition openings and premieres as well as live music, comedy and dance performances throughout the evening at various locations. "The summer Gallery Crawl shows the Cultural District at its best," shared Janis Burley Wilson, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement. "Cool people, live music, inspiring art and more attract thousands to SPACE, Wood Street Galleries and over 25 other Crawl locations."

The Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District is presented and programmed by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Since 2004, the Cultural Trust's free quarterly gallery crawls have featured thought-provoking, unique and award-winning works by local, national and international artists, accompanied by a variety of free music and dance happenings for residents and visitors alike to experience first-hand.

Wood Street Galleries

D-Fuse: Pattern and Noise
D-Fuse are a London-based artist collective with more than 15 years of history in installation, film, experimental documentary, photography, live cinema performance and architectural projects. In recent years much of their practice has focused on environmental issues.

Pattern and Noise is D-Fuse's first solo exhibition in the US. Artists Mike Faulkner, Matthias Kispert, Paul Mumford and Toby Harris use the two floors of the gallery to explore the different themes central to their work: Small Global, focuses on data visualization in relation to environmental issues and global interdependency, while Tekt?n, references their roots in audio-visual culture, exploring the spatio-temporal qualities of light and motion. To celebrate this, on July 10th D-Fuse will perform two A/V shows - Tekt?n and Latitude. On view through September 6.

SPACE

Wall Paintings, curated by Robert Raczka
Twelve artists will each create a large painting directly on the walls of SPACE. There will be a live art event open to the public, with the artists working in the gallery throughout the day on July 10. The event culminates in the evening reception during which the artists complete their paintings. On view July 10 through August 30.

Window SPACE | Thinkerers by Randy Gilson (A Randyland project)
Thinkerers is a series of more than 200 original pieces of art created with colorful and unique faces, hand-painted on reclaimed slate tiles to bring back to life the energy of a material as old as the Earth itself. windowSPACE is an ongoing series of 'window exhibitions' from the outside looking in.

Deeper than Rap is an exhibit by Grits Capone that blends influences from ancient African societies and pop culture juxtaposed against some of Hip Hop's most prolific figures through digital collage. It serves as the link between ancient African greatness to the success of their diasporic descendants in Rap music.

A set of billboards reminding the viewer that life can be short and its end unpredictable.

Cell Phone Disco by InformationLab
A surface that visualizes the electromagnetic field of an active mobile phone. Several thousand lights illuminate when you make or receive a phone call in the vicinity of the installation.

Why People Photograph
The Magenta Foundation invited Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh Filmmakers photography faculty to assemble an exhibition representative of the work coming out of both institutions. This group show represents students who are passionate about the medium and work in a non-traditional manner. Personal narratives, social documents, constructed still lifes, abstractions, landscape, fashion and portraiture are all explored here, along with photographic books and gelatin/silver images.

Lecture by artist Tony Tasset
The Office of Public Art will host a lecture with artist Tony Tasset at 6:00 p.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Room 406. Seating is limited, register online. Prolific American artist Tony Tasset will discuss Magnolias for Pittsburgh and other projects completed in the public realm. A reception with the artist will take place following the lecture, at 7:00 p.m. at public art Magnolias for Pittsburgh, corner of Penn Avenue & 7th Street. Tony Tasset's Magnolias for Pittsburgh is a public art installation of two bronze hand-casted magnolia trees, showcasing nearly 800 hand-sculpted flowers each, set within a garden created by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, to "create a little magic, fairy-tale moment in the daily hustle and bustle of downtown Pittsburgh."

Sidney Mullis creates performance-based video projections of invented animals. Together, they create a kingdom that exists analogous to the homo sapien realm. By playing dress-up, an activity engaged by children, Sidney portrays imagined sexes and genders to understand pre-existing constructions of how woman is realized and, furthermore, performed.

The chimera is an implausible creature composed of disparate parts. It confounds, disrupts and indulges our imagination. Improvisers, public speakers, and comedians compete by giving PowerPoint presentations for slides they've never seen before. Each contestant is faced with a self-playing slide deck full of surprises, and it's up to them to turn it into a presentation that makes sense. It's a loud, crazy, and often raunchy comedy show that is unlike anything else in the city. Hosted by Brad Stephenson and Gayle Pazerski.
