BWW Review: An Everyman's Journey: MIDDLETOWN at The Public BWW Review: An Everyman's Journey: MIDDLETOWN at The Public
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold on October 21, 2021

The Public Theatre’s production of Dan Clancy’s MIDDLETOWN proves a clever way to maneuver the company back into production after the pandemic pause. The four-character comedy-drama, designed to be performed without scenery or costumes by actors who read from scripts at podiums, requires a minimalist production and asks the audience to concentrate only on the characters’ journey from kindergarten to old age. That story, as directed by Janet Mitchko, is sweetly funny and warmly heartfelt.

Her show is a loving tribute, filled with the big hit songs as well as some more enchanting obscure tunes, all tied together with some informative and sometimes dishy stories about the legendary composer of Milk & Honey, Hello, Dolly! As the curtain rises on the Manningham's residence in 19th century London, all appears to be the essence of Victorian tranquility -- except for items going missing, an injured dog, and Mrs. Manningham, who keeps hearing footsteps that aren't there. She thinks she's going mad, until an Inspector from Scotland Yard starts asking questions about Mr. Manningham's past, and she begins to suspect that her husband's insinuating kindness masks more sinister motives. A Broadway hit first produced on the West End under the title Gaslight, this tale of mystery and murder boast one of the most brilliant, suspenseful sequences in modern theatre. Performances run Oct 22nd thru Nov 7th, 2021 at Curtain Players, 5691 Harlem Road, Galena, Ohio 43021. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit: http://curtainplayers.org
