SCAN Health Offers SilverSneakers Fitness Program in California

As part of its mission to keep seniors healthy and independent, SCAN Health Plan today announced it will expand its existing partnership with well-being improvement leader, Healthways. SCAN Health Plan has been offering the award-winning SilverSneakers Fitness Program to its Medicare members in Arizona since 2011 and with the expanded agreement, SilverSneakers will be available to members in California beginning January 2014.

"SilverSneakers is a wonderful complement to our many programs, Education Centers, SCAN Van and other community outreach activities designed to keep seniors healthy and engaged," said Cathy Batteer, senior vice president and general manager, all SCAN markets. "Our members in Arizona have enjoyed and benefited from this fun and important program, so we are thrilled to now be able to offer it to SCAN members in California as well."

The effectiveness of the program is evidenced through a 2012 survey of SCAN members who have participated in SilverSneakers. According to the survey results, more than half of surveyed members reported improvement in arthritis pain and lower back pain since participating in the program. In addition, about half said SilverSneakers is their "first fitness club membership."

"Healthways is honored to renew our agreement with SCAN and to expand our partnership to reach members in California," said Ben R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways president and chief executive officer. "For more than 35 years, SCAN has been focusing on the unique needs of older adults. This partnership with Healthways and SilverSneakers is a testament to its vision to improve the lives of its members by offering a user-friendly, proven program that provides a unique combination of physical fitness and social experiences."
