1) Hottest Articles on from 7/27/2014 - 8/3/2014 BWW Recap: SYTYCD Eliminates Four, Announces All-Stars! Full Results & Pictures!
by Matt Tamanini - July 31, 2014

I was all kinds of conflicted coming into tonight's 'So You Think You Can Dance.' At the end of the episode, we were going to have to lose four dancers to get to the Top-10. Now, I am all for getting straight to the Top-10 dancers partnering with the All-Stars, but the prospect of dropping four was a little scary. At this point in the season, there were still a number of really talented individuals that haven't seemed to catch on yet, and I was afraid that with four cuts that someone really I really liked was going to go home tonight, without ever getting a chance to show his or her stuff. Unfortunately, I was right. So much of this show comes down to what genres and choreographers you get when, and two of the dancers eliminated tonight I think have gotten tough draws during the live shows. (more...)

3) Hottest Articles on from 7/27/2014 - 8/3/2014 BWW Reviews: Dance Theatre Of Harlem is Soul En Pointe
by Katricia Lang - July 28, 2014

Last week, The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) presented a classic but eclectic program of four ballets at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. To my surprise, they gave me something I could feel. The performance reminded me that ballet can be fun, art should be communal and a coloratura soprano singing 'Domine Deus, Rex caelestis' is just as electrifying as James Brown singing 'Mother Popcorn.' 4) Hottest Articles on from 7/27/2014 - 8/3/2014 BWW Interviews: Dance as Liberation - Eric Sciotto and Kristen Martin Star in FOOTLOOSE
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sullwold - July 31, 2014

'Dance is a metaphor for expression, for freedom. In Footloose we use dance to express ourselves when we have no words. [As characters] we are all closed off, and finally at the end of the story, we are loosened; we become individuals again.' Speaking is Kristen Martin, who plays Ariel in Maine State Music Theatre's final season production of Footloose, which runs from August 6-23. Her co-star, Eric Sciotto, agrees that his character, Ren, is 'on a journey to find himself after being abandoned by his father. Ren sees in Ariel a troubled soul who reminds him of himself. They recognize immediately that they are kindred spirits.' (more...)

5) Hottest Articles on from 7/27/2014 - 8/3/2014 BWW Reviews: THE BOLSHOI BALLET Finishes a Sold-Out Lincoln Center Festival Engagement With a Lumbering SPARTACUS
by Sondra Forsyth - July 29, 2014

Returning to NYC after a nine-year hiatus, the storied Bolshoi Ballet danced to nearly sold-out houses night after night at the Koch Theater during the 2014 Lincoln Center Festival in July. The evening of July 25th, when I saw the company's largely turgid production of "Spartacus", was no exception. Other reviewers had already panned the company's first two ballets of the warhorse repertoire for the run, "Swan Lake" and "Don Quixote". None other than Alistair Macaulay of The New York Times wrote on July 16th that the Bolshoi "seems keen to prove that it has reverted to the ghastly artistic torpor it enjoyed in the last two decades of the Soviet era." Following the overwhelming success of New York City Center's sold out FALL FOR DANCE FESTIVAL last year in Central Park, New York City Center will once again present two free evenings of dance in association with The Public Theater at The Delacorte on Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13 at 8:00 p.m. (more...)

7) Hottest Articles on from 7/27/2014 - 8/3/2014 BWW Interviews: DTH's Dance Master Keith Saunders Talks Ballet and The Legacy of Harlem
by Katricia Lang - July 28, 2014

'America's not used to seeing a black face in this particular art form,' says 16-year-old Naazir Muhammad about ballet. He should know. He and his twin brother, Shaakir, both practice ballet at the American Ballet Theatre School in New York. Both are aware that ballet is expected to have a certain face. The Dance Theatre of Harlem defies these expectations. Because of this, the company is special in two ways. It is innovative and radical in existing as well as being innovative and radical in dance. Aretha Franklin en point? You never. (more...)

10) Hottest Articles on from 7/27/2014 - 8/3/2014 BWW Reviews: Misty Copeland - A Star Is Rocketing at American Ballet Theatre
by Marjorie Liebert - August 01, 2014

Misty Copeland, the rising American Ballet Theatre soloist, may not yet have been officially promoted to principal dancer, but her command of the stage attracts the full attention of the audience, as would any prima ballerina. Whether dancing principal or soloist roles, her strong technique and charismatic personality bring fresh air and excitement to both classical and contemporary ballets. Few dancers these days make me smile and spurt superlatives whenever I see them perform. (more...)
