Joe's Pub is proud to announce the headlining runs of shows for its 2017 Fall Season, running September 6 to November 30!

Highlights include over thirty different companies taking part in the DANCE NOW Festival, running September 6-9; afrofuturist electropop duo The Illustrious Blacks on September 7, October 26, and November 30; stories and spoken word about the American immigrant experience in This Alien Nation on September 13, October 11, November 8, and December 6; the inimitable Justin VivIan Bond's new performance JVB Shows Up on September 15-17; and, funk-rock icon Nona Hendryx with avant-garde guitarist Gary Lucas playing the music of Captain Beefheart for two shows on September 20.

Host Sofija Stefanovic welcomes some of her favorite outsiders for a celebration of immigration! Each month, at one of New York's finest venues, some fish-out-of-water tell true tales from their lives. Hear anecdotes about language barriers, cultural missteps, rumbles, romance, and more! From addresses to the President, to songs about first kisses, the evening is set to be one of worldly proportions. In a multicultural world that harbors some strong anti-immigration feelings, being an outsider can be uncomfortable, hilarious, and weird. But it also makes for some great stories. Legendary Funk Rock Diva Nona Hendryx and acclaimed avant-guitarist Gary Lucas perform a tribute to visionary composer, bandleader, poet and painter Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, who single-handedly changed the face of music, beginning with a series of ground-breaking albums with his Magic Band from 1967's Safe as Milk to 1969's hallucinatory Trout Mask Replica through 1982' Ice Cream for Crow. The World of Captain Beefheart is a comprehensive overview of the man's towering legacy, re-imagined and infused with new blood by Hendryx and Lucas, who starred in a symphonic Beefheart Tribute with Amsterdam's famed 65-piece Metropole Orchestra. Along for the wild ride are expert Beefheart practitioners Jesse Krakow on bass, JorDan Shapiro on keyboards, and Richard Dworkin on drums. Nona Hendryx is a longtime fierce admirer of Van Vliet's music, and Gary Lucas cut his guitar teeth as an incendiary player on the last two Captain Beefheart albums.

HASSAN HAKMOUN

Hassan Hakmoun is one of the most notable figures in contemporary Moroccan music, schooled in the traditional sounds of the Gnawa people in his native Marrakesh. Since moving to the US in 1987 his music has absorbed elements from a variety of popular styles, from jazz and world music to neo-classical contemporary Western music and cerebral pop, resulting in a diverse, award-winning and critically acclaimed body of work. It's been 26 years since the talented vocalist and sintir player released Gift of the Gnawa, yet the time has been spent well. Hakmoun's latest album, Unity, is the finest example of ritual music combined with the heart of American rock, soul and blues ever recorded. "The inspiration of Unity was to work on certain songs I've played live but have never recorded before," Hakmoun says. "I've been working on new styles for a long time, and a lot of Moroccan musicians are taking advantage of the doors I opened for them. I'm happy to be able to keep performing for those people who are inspired by what I do." Hassan Hakmoun's 6-piece ensemble includes the sintir plus vocals, guitar, drums, percussion, flute/sax, and karkaba, the metal double castanets of the Gnawa.

ALSARAH & THE NUBATONES

Alsarah is a Sudanese-born singer, songwriter and ethnomusicologist. Born in the capital city of Khartoum where she spent the first 8 years of her life, she relocated to Taez, Yemen, with her family to escape the ever-stifling regime in her native country. She abruptly moved to the US in 1994, when a brief civil war broke out in Yemen. Alsarah started her musical training at the age of 12 upon arriving in the US. After attending the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter High School, in Hadley MA, she spent the next 4 years at Wesleyan University studying music with a concentration in Ethnomusicology. Now residing in Brooklyn, she is a self-proclaimed practitioner of East-African Retro-Pop working on various projects. She has toured both Nationally and Internationally with critically acclaimed groups such as the Nile Project, where she was featured on their debut album, Aswan (named in the top 5 must hear international albums by NPR). She has also released an album with French producer Débruit, Aljawal (Soundways Recordings), as well as an album with her current band, Alsarah & the Nubatones, Silt (Wonderwheel Recordings), touring internationally since its release in 2014.

Ute Lemper returns to Joe's Pub with her new show, Songs From the Broken Heart, featuring stories of life, wonder, love, doubt, and loss, spanning from her Song Trilogy of Poets to her own tales of long sleepless nights taking the occasional detour down a dark side alley into the Streets of Berlin and Paris. Ute presents selections from her self-penned repertoire alongside the lyrics of Bukowski, Coehlo, Leo Ferre, Jacques Brel, Nick Cave, and Tom Waits. Ute Lemper's career is vast and varied. She has made her mark on the stage, in films, in concert and as a unique recording artist. She has been universally praised for her interpretations of Berlin Cabaret Songs, the works of Kurt Weill and Berthold Brecht and the French chanson songbook as well as her own compositions and her more jazz-influenced collaborations and works. In the world of theater Ute made her mark with her portrayals on Broadway, in Paris and in London's West End.

At KareHouse you'll find like-minded individuals learning to navigate their emotions and desperate to connect. Michael Kimmel (author) is the creator of Songbird, based on Chekhov's The Seagull and set in Nashville, TN. He is also the creator and adaptor of The Last Goodbye, a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with music and lyrics by famed singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley. Upcoming musicals conceived and written by Kimmel include KareHouse, as well as Wildwood, a new musical about the legendary shore town. Michael is one of the creators/producers of The Score, a new podcast featuring live performances of new musicals debuting in 2017. Libby Winters (composer) has been writing songs since she was 5 years old, though KareHouse marks the first time she has called herself a composer. She started the grunge-pop band Lakes in 2016 for which she writes songs, plays guitar and sings. As an actress she has appeared in numerous plays and musicals including American Idiot on Broadway from which she has drawn much inspiration. Jenny Koons (director) is a theater director who specializes in bringing diverse artists together to create original cross-disciplinary work. Recent projects include A Sucker Emcee (National Black Theatre), Airness (Movement Director, Humana Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville), and more. She is also on the steering committee for The Ghostlight Project, serves on the advisory board for UK-based Artistic Directors of the Future, and is a member of New York City Center's Artists' Board. Jenny joined the SPACE Ryder Farm curation team in 2015 with the mission of increasing diversity within artist residency programming.

Nellie McKay is back at Joe's Pub to debut her latest musical biography, this time of one of comedy's legendary female voices, Joan Rivers. McKay co-created and starred in the award-winning off-Broadway hit Old Hats and has written three previous acclaimed musical biographies: I Want to Live!, the story of Barbara Graham, the third woman executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin; Silent Spring: It's Not Nice to Fool Mother Nature, an exploration of environmental pioneer Rachel Carson, and A Girl Named Bill - The Life and Times of Billy Tipton, named one of the Best Concerts of 2014 by The New York Times. A recipient of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Humanitarian Award in recognition of her dedication to animal rights, McKay is a vocal advocate for feminism, civil rights and other deeply felt progressive ideals. She is currently part of the campaign to get horse-drawn carriages off the streets of New York City. Nellie has released six full-length albums, including Normal As Blueberry Pie: A Tribute to Doris Day ("among the killer overhauls of American standards" - The New York Times) and her latest, My Weekly Reader, music of the '60s co-produced with Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick ("[Nellie] manifests more historical grasp than any psych band yet to show its hand. - Robert Christgau).

Tell Me Something I Don't Know is a live game show and podcast hosted by Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of the Freakonomics books and host of Freakonomics Radio. It has the same kind of factual, inquisitive journalism that has been a hallmark of Dubner's work, but it's disguised in the most entertaining, unexpected, and occasionally ridiculous conversation you're likely to hear.
