The Strand Book Store will host comedian, activist, and mayor of Reykjavík, Iceland, Jón Gnarr on Thursday, June 19th. Gnarr will discuss his memoir, Gnarr!: How I Became the Mayor of a Large City in Iceland and Changed the World.

Noam Chomsky calls Gnarr his "favorite mayor. No competition, in fact," while Lady Gaga praises him so highly that she says, "More mayors in the world should be like Jón Gnarr." People from all over the world have gravitated to the founder of the Best Party--and it's easy to see why.

In 2009, comedian and anarchist Jón Gnarr founded the Best Party in order to satirize his country's failing political system. Entering (and winning!) the race for mayor of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital, Jón ran on a platform that promised to get the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park into downtown parks, free towels at public swimming pools, and a "drug-free Parliament by 2020." Visit Strand's rare book room for Jón's firsthand account of his revolutionary win and his serious vision of a more enlightened politics for the future!

Jón will be joined in conversation with Gawker's Hamilton Nolan. Hamilton is one of Gawker's longest tenured writers.
