In Rickus's still-lifes, each object seems to stand alone, as if inviting the viewer to consider it on its own terms as well as within the larger composition. This is by design-Rickus's arrangements are often inspired by human relationships. "The way I have things touch and overlap and lean in my paintings is something I get from the way people relate," Rickus says in John A. Park's profile of the painter for The Artist's Magazine last January.
Janet Rickus's show runs through Saturday, September 30th.

Samuel Hung's process begins with arranging his collection of lucky cats, kewpie dolls, and vintage soda bottles until each item takes on a role of its own in the composition. The canvas becomes his stage and enables these characters to act out past experiences, or hypothetical ones, in their own imaginary world.<

Kassan's technical mastery of oil paint combined with adept draftsmanship enables him to fluently represent what he sees. This is evident in the stunning flesh tones Kassan achieves. In his new painting Dorothy, the Wanderer (below) transparent layers of oil paint are built up, forming an intricate lattice of veins, blood and skin. Through this light enters and is reflected back, infusing the subject with veridical luminosity.
