Deanna Fainelli Showcases Work at Studio Gallery in San Francisco
On the heels of a summer sprinkled with urban exploring trips, San Rafael-based mixed media artist, Deanna Fainelli, will show work influenced by her urbex experiences in two group shows at Studio Gallery's new location at 1641 Pacific St., San Francisco.
While Ms. Fainelli's photos and mental archive of her urban exploring trips are not literally represented in her artwork, the influence of the beauty she finds in rust, decay, patina, graffiti and discarded personal items is evident in her work. It's also the thrill (mixed with a healthy dose of fear) of wandering through abandoned buildings that allows her imagination to wander and conjure stories of former residents.
Most recently Ms. Fainelli spent an afternoon exploring the abandoned Naval hospital at Mare Island. Built in 1869 and abandoned in 1995, she wandered the three-story building solo (probably not the best idea) and despite shaky hands took photos and mental notes of a place steeped in historical significance and infinite creative inspiration. Earlier in the summer, Ms Fainelli, visited the Salton Sea community of Bombay Beach, a former resort town littered with abandoned homes and a few colorful residents content to live on the fringe of what appears to be a post-apocalyptic world. The urbex experience not only serves as creative fuel, it also feeds Ms. Fainelli's adventurous spirit so evident in the edgy, urban style of her art.
