March 13-29, The Umbrella Stage Company presents a bracing new production of the acclaimed drama, Bent, by Martin Sherman.
Profound and provocative, Bent is a story of courage and survival in the face of extreme hate and adversity. Set in 1930s Berlin, where homosexuality is viewed as worse than being Jewish, Max and Rudy attempt to flee before being caught by Nazi soldiers. Impossible circumstances leave Max alone and in denial of who he is when an unexpected love helps him rediscover himself, and his dignity and humanity.
"Bent sheds light on a period of gay history that is not well known," says director Peyton Pugmire, who last directed La Cage Aux Folles at The Umbrella. While acknowledging that the subject matter is at times challenging, Pugmire sees in the production an opportunity to "bring healing to humanity," in an almost shamanistic way by "invoking the energy and spirit of the characters" and, ultimately, honoring those whose lives were lost during this dark time in human history.
