After the success last year’s sold out concerts with the African Children’s Choir, South Shore Conservatory (SSC) and the Plymouth Public Schools (PPS) collaborate again to present two concerts on Friday, April 10, 7 pm and Saturday, April 11, 7 pm, at the Performing Arts Center at Plymouth North High School, 41 Obery Street, Plymouth.

Conductor Kathy McMinn, director of SSC’s Pure Treble chorus and two Plymouth Public School elementary school choruses, is excited about this year’s expanded collaboration. “Although Plymouth schools and South Shore Conservatory started this collaboration last year, it was mostly centered around the logistics of ticketing and promotion. This year, with SSC’s Pure Treble and Pure Harmony choruses and PPS singers performing together in both concerts, the true nature of collaboration will be realized.”
SSC and PPS students will enjoy more opportunities to interact with ACC students this year outside of rehearsals. “In response to parents’ requests to give students the opportunity to interact more, we added two pizza parties and a game day at Plymouth Community Intermediate School. They’ll play games together in the gymnasium, and singers from all of the choruses will help create a large mural, which we plan to hang in the lobby at the concert.”
Plymouth’s No Place For Hate Committee members, many of whom attended last year’s concerts, and Plymouth High School students have volunteered to help with the scheduled activities through ushering, pizza parities, and games.
The combined choruses will present the New England premiere of the World Unity Organization (WUO) song We All See the Stars by John Ciambriello, which focuses on the topic of equality. Sara Ting from WUO, author of the poem The Sun, which inspired the song, contacted McMinn to ask her to take a listen. McMinn explains why she chose the piece for the upcoming concerts, “After I listened to it I knew that it was a nice fit and conveys one of the messages we are trying to communicate to our children and our audiences.”
McMinn, who helped facilitate the ACC collaboration, has spent part of many summers volunteering in South Africa working for the Music For Life Institute, the parent organization for the African Children’s Choir. Since its inception in 1984, ACC has provided education to over 52,000 children in Uganda, Sudan, South Africa, Ghana, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Kenya.

Tickets for the concerts are $12. Proceeds from the two April concerts benefit the ACC, which utilizes music to provide food, shelter, education, and medical relief to children in need in Africa. All seating is reserved this year and must be purchased online.
