Student Blog: Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

Like many other people over the last eighteen months, I have used this unprecedented time to learn more about who I am and grow as a person in order to be the best possible version of myself. Although the journey hasn't been easy by any means, it is necessary and something I'm grateful to have poured my energy into over the last year and a half.

Recently, every aspect of what I had figured out in terms of how to better myself, were questioned by the idea of how those changes would work in the college setting. The atmosphere is entirely different and my mental health is something that is affected one way or another during the return back to school.

This year, I've been working on enjoying time alone and viewing being by myself in a positive light. For me, this is a tedious task and a change that has taken both a lot of time and patience. Which is always more than okay in the process of growth and healing. But just last week, a decision arose that forced me to embrace the change like never before.

I'm not one to go to events or trips by myself mostly because that's out of my comfort zone and I've gotten used to doing things with my friends or family. So when the opportunity came up to go to a minor league baseball game, but no one I knew could go, I was faced with the question of do I miss out on something I want to do because of my comfort level or do I step out of where I feel "safe" and go?

The answer, in short, is that I went.

And I had so much fun despite being myself at a school run event.

At the end of the night, when the team had won and everyone was cheering in celebration, I realized that I had enjoyed myself despite all the anxiety and worrying that went into the decision that got me there.

There's a lot to be said about enjoying your own company, but something I learned then is that I need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. And maybe but in a drastic way, just enough to allow me to grow and find a piece of myself that I didn't know existed. Stepping out of my comfort zone isn't what I would call fun, but whenever it happens, I never regret doing it. Any moment where I felt uncomfortable during the game was a reminder of what I was doing and why, which only helped me realize even more how incredible this simple act really was.

Moral of the story, don't lose out on moments just because you'll be experiencing them alone. Overcome that uncomfortable feeling and try something new. That's the only way you are going to blossom and find so much more of the world that's available, even if you didn't know it. I promise it's worth it time and time again. There's nothing wrong with putting yourself out there. How will you know about all the greatness that exists if you never try?

My advice to you is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. You definitely won't regret taking those steps to try new things and help yourself discover more about who you are.
