"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

^^ Really? What about Jennifer?? I would think they would try to showcase all nominated performers...

Well, there's always at least one show that doesn't.
I would think the producers would choose a number that is the most engaging and best represents the show. Showcasing nominees seems beside the point at that stage of the game, since the winners are already decided.

It's not a secret. It's just that after the nominees the telecast producers meet with the show producers and discuss options, figure out what segments need to be pre-taped, what can be done live and how to adapt the excerpts for the larger Radio City stage. There is also timing. It use to be each show got 5-6 minutes now it's about half that. Usually it is all finalized about 2 weeks ahead of the broadcast so the cast can so some rehearsals.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Wasn't it last year that they chose not to pre-announce the performances and keep it secret?

N2N should be doing "Just Another Day" or "Light." "You Don't Know"/"I Am The One" are exceptional but they totally lose their impact/meaning when taken out of context. Not that "Day" and "Light" don't but they could easily work out of context. I also think they'd sell more tickets with a bigger, more rousing ensemble number than a dark, confusing (to those who haven't seen the show) song sang by three of the cast members. Just my two cents.
But as a fan and proponent of the show, I'm excited to see Aaron, Alice, and Bobby sing and act the hell out of the number(s).
And I thought someone posted that SHREK was doing "Freak Flag"? I could totally be making that up so don't take my word for it at all...it may have been a rumor as the song doesn't feature any of SHREK's nominated performers in it...I'd think they'd wanna do something with D'Arcy James in makeup and costume at least. I'm almost positive there was a thread like this last year and it was known before hand what everyone was doing

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
Hm, it wouldn't seem sensible to do both songs unless they're cutting the ensemble out of "What's Up Duloc." Otherwise, that would be a quick costume change! And I think it's more important to feature Shrek/Donkey/Fiona, even if Sieber is their best bet at a Tony. This performance will give the show a lot of exposure, so they should feature the star of the show and the most recognizable [title] character.
Gurl, plz!! The producers are NOT going to NOT feature the most recognizable face in the show!!! Their BIGGEST selling point is the character SHREK. No matter WHAT they perform, the character Shrek will make a notable appearance. Whether in an opening montage, a video segment, or the nominee performance. It's gonna happen.

How is "Light" any less confusing out of context than "You Don't Know/I Am The One"? Sorry but I think that "Light" would be the absolute WORST choice for n2n to go with. Their selection isn't my number one choice but I think if they can pull it off for TV then it could be incredibly powerful.
And for what it's worth - my first exposure to n2n was at the Tom Kitt concert awhile back when he, Alice and Aaron performed "You Don't Know/I Am The One" and it didn't spoil the show at all for me. If anything, that performance is what finally pushed me to road trip it to DC to actually see the show!
