Frozen made two billion at the gate. I think with time the world is going to see that animated features are not just the province of children. As this Aida was originally developed by Disney as an animated project (I believe there are even character design sheets out there from a very early phase of it; after The Lion King, they wanted another "serious" [read: Oscar-bait] project with Elton and Tim, so they bought the rights to Leontyne Price's original storybook version, but it was Elton's idea to develop it as a live musical instead after Beauty and the Beast kicked off), I see no reason why they couldn't make it (or a lot of other popular musicals for that matter, such as Wicked) animated and have a hit.

The key advantage to animation is that you could use whatever voices you want, even if they would be too old for the role now onstage or in a live-action film. (I personally would favor the celebrity casting they proposed for the live-action film that never got off the ground in 2007: Beyonce as Aida, and Christina Aguilera as Amneris.)

It's also worth noting that in an animated film, the imagery and the music is what carries it, so it wouldn't particularly matter how good or bad the libretto was, given that story-lines and dialogue for animated features tend to be far more simplistic, bordering on primitive.

I think this project would work best as an animated feature. Preferably in a more mature style.

as a huge fan of this musical, happy to see there are many other fans who want this

I would also think an animated version would be commercially more successful

Like Wicked, they need to change the ending for a happy ending with Radames and Aida and get rid of the reincarnation theme at the beginning and end, then this would be a family friendly story where the priincess and hero live happier ever after in Nubia or some new land together, and write a happy ending for amneris too.

the music in this show was really really spectacular,  and deserves immortality on film!!!!

Those character designs were not done by Disney and are the work of CalArts student Ben Balistreri, as noted on the same website:   http://animatedviews.com/2007/ben-balistreri-interview/

Excerpt:

AV: While at CalArts, why did you create model sheets for Aida and Don Quixote?

BB: Aida was a design assignment in one of my character design classes. The Don Quixote designs were done at a summer program called The Disney Boot Camp. That was a month long program that Disney tried out were they gathered art students from around the country and taught them about animation. The program only lasted the one time so I was lucky enough to take place in it. To be clear, the Don Quixote work wasn’t development for the proposed feature. It was simply some development I did on my own at the camp.

AV: Are you amazed that many people believe the designs originated at Disney?

BB: Yah! I saw them posted on a website as development for projects that Disney never did. I’m pretty surprised any one thought they were good enough to even be mistaken for real development work!
