I would LOVE to see her play the role...and it not be a John Doyle production either!
The sinister side of me would welcome all the Diva fights between the fans of Patti Lupone and Bernadette Peters (as well as any between the two ladies themselves!).
Also, there is NO WAY she is TOO OLD for Sally or Phyllis in Follies. The question would be rather she is right for the role, but age is not a factor what-so-ever IMO.
I think the women need to register as being in their 50's...remember Sally has two GROWN boys! Even though she was Phyllis, I would think that Donna Murphy would be a bit too young for the role.

Donna Murphy was the perfect age for the part actually. She is 48 when she played the part and it made perfect sense that she would have been a naive chorus girl 30 years before that, going to dance all night at Tony's, living at an apartment were the tub was in the kitchen, etc. Just like my fortunate friends who were around in the 70s say the only Phyllis is Alexis Smith, Murphy will always be Phyllis in my mind.
I don't think Bernadette is appropriate for Phyllis at all, she could "pull it off" but if she were to play one of the two female leads in FOLLIES, she'd be better-suited for Sally. I'd love to see her play that part, I think she'd bring a childish approach to it reminiscent of what Dorothy Collins so brilliantly did with the part. I don't think she possesses the coldness necessary to play Phyllis.
I truly hate it that every time there is a Bernadette Peters, a Patti LuPone fan or even a Patti LuPone non-fan feels the need to pit them against each other, so unnecessary. Still, it'd be fantastic to see a FOLLIES production with Peters as Sally and LuPone as Phyllis, there'd be fireworks on that stage! (Though LuPone possesses none of the elegance required to make the role work).

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

But Donna Murphy to me seems younger than she is.
I guess I always think that the Follies roles are always older than they are because when I look at the black and white pictures from the original production, the costumes and hair styles make me think the woman are older.
As for Patti as Phyllis...since things seem to need to be "just right" in these roles. Phyllis (and Carlotta) evokes feelings of an "aging vamp" (an older Jane Krakowski) and an "I've still got it woman". To me...at this point Patti is more a character actress.

There have been rumors since the initial announcement that the team at Encores! selected ANYONE CAN WHISTLE for this coming season specifically as a vehicle for Peters to play Cora.
We'll see what comes to pass.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

And since the Tony's are praised oh-so-highly here let us not forget her "questionable" British accent got her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
And it was a tight year, even considering S&D was 1/2 one-woman-show. That recording is abhorrent, one of the worst produced cast albums ever made and noticeably warped in many places ("English Girls" is terrible in every way, I'll give you that).

I think the recent lack of recordings of Encores shows is due both to declining interest in recordings in general (Bway is always a low-seller to begin with) and the fact that every producer now thinks their Encores show has the buzz to transfer so they hold out for a production. Everyone thinks the new Encores show is gonna be the next CHICAGO or WONDERFUL TOWN and transfer and get great reviews and be a big hit but that almost never happens. If their production of FOLLIES didn't transfer or get recorded, nothing will.
I hope the upcoming ACW concert proves me wrong. Steve and Arthur deserve their baby on Broadway again. That score is incredible and Arthur can get the book to work. I know it.

Wonderful Town lost money. It didn't make a dime.
