AT least one Broadway diva is up in arms about Mayor Bloomberg's plan to turn the Great White Way into the Great Walkway. Patti LuPone (above), who most recently starred in "Gypsy," says Hizzoner's plan to close Broadway to vehicles from 47th to 42nd streets will impede her ability to get to the theater. "I don't know how I'm going to get to work. Excuse me, I've got a show - move over! What am I gonna do?" she tells BlogTalkRadio host Shaun Daily. "Obviously [Bloomberg] doesn't go to the theater. Well, maybe he does. [But] I've never seen him."

I don't know if this is a good idea or a bad idea...but arent' they only trying it as a trial basis for the summer? Then, IF they find it has helped the pedestrian traffic, they'll consider it permanent?

From several sources at the St. James Theatre, La LuPone still arrives around 6pm on weeknights and sits backstage playing cards with Linda Balgord.

Around 7pm they send someone out to get their dinner order.

They both leave the theatre about 10:45pm and return the following day and repeat this routine.

They stopped this routine on what was La LuPone's matinee days.

Wow...I wonder what Patti eats before the show? I was always told it was a good idea not to eat 2-3 hours or so before performing? I know everyone is different though.

If you can handle it, greasey and oily/fatty food (i.e. McDonald's or Burger King) is the BEST stuff to eat right before a performance.

I'm not sure who told you you shouldn't eat anything 2 - 3 hours before a show? That's silly.

Maybe like 30 mins or an hour... but if you can handle food fine, it has no real effect on your voice (unless it is dairy products).

Beyond that, your theory means you eat dinner around 4:00 pm. Much too early because then you'll want to snack right before the show! Unless you have a huge meal.

Those I know in musical theatre say they do not eat a good few hours before the show. And they definately avoid dairy AND really fatty, oily foods before they sing. They stick to room tempature water.

I know there was a discussion about stagedooring not that long ago and it was mentioned in the topic about how the actors are hungry after the show since most of them haven't eaten a meal for 5 + hours.

My vocal coach believes you should eat about 3 hours before you are going to go on, because it will give you the energy you need for the performance, and avoid eating meals AFTER the 3 hours mark because it could negatively impact your vocals.

Everyone is different I guess. I know Eden Espinosa avoids carbs before a show because she says it makes her throat feel bloated.

Um, leave earlier? Walk, like the rest of us mere mortals? Wake up and realize that NYC and the world/universe don't revolve around you and your needs? And the whole point of the pedestrian mall was to ease foot traffic. Or she could easily come by car from 6th Avenue or 8th, depending on where the theatre is located since all the east-west streets are staying open.

Yes... you should avoid dairy but you do NOT need to "avoid" oily greasy food. The oil and grease on the food will create an extremely light coating on your throat which acts as an artificial lubrication.

Do you notice a difference? Probably not.

But you really have no reason to avoid it. If anything, it just helps keep your chords moist and lubed for about 2 hours.

It's not an opinion. It's a basic fact of science and life.


Grease from food + your mouth = oil transfer to throat = layer of "lubrication"/protection for chords = healthier vocal performance.

I just found out that Patti LuPone is doing her show with Mandy at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas. It's only about 80 miles or so from where I live here in Austin, Texas. I bought an orchestra (left) ticket very close to the stage. Ah can't wait. Maybe Mandy will autograph my "Evita" poster. from RC in Austin, Texas...
