well, i went to see "Gypsy" tonight (not seeing it since the first week of previews...and I must say that the show is still wonderful and everyones performance choices are much, much stronger than almost 9 months ago. Bernadette Peters was vocally fantastic tonight (although she did wipe her nose quite a few times)... Tammy is beautiful and her vocal ability is MUCH stronger than it was at the beginning of the run. Kate Reinders has a beautiful mix sound but, looks posessed as June lol... finally, we saw the u/s for Tulsa (matt bauer) i think his name was...he did a fine job! His dancing was beautiful and he is a great spotter. The Lamb was wearing a diaper it was cute. And to finish, I cried during the overture. It's a broadway treasure.

I saw GYPSY in the summer, and I wasn't that impressed. I saw it again on NEW YEARS, and Berndetta Peters was in top vocal form. I'm still not sure she's right for the role of Rose, but she certainly sold those songs that night.

Yeah, I remember seeing the show in previews, and not being too impressed, and then seeing it again this past July and being totally blown away. Bernadette Peters is outstanding vocally and acting-wise now, and the cast overall has just gotten stronger. Although I did like Jenna Gavigan (u/s for June) when I saw it back in July. She was just too cute!

Cheers,

Is Bernadette and Gypsy eligable for the Drama Desk Awards this year? If I'm not mistaken they missed the deadline last year for those awards, but just made the Tony cut-off. Perhaps it would have been more beneficial for them to hold off opening night and missed last year's Tony deadline as well. But then we would get to have all of those fun Marissa/Bernadette debates. re: re: re: re: re-visit to Gypsy tonight

I'm planning to see it for a 4th time once the weather warms up a bit. I'm so glad to hear that she is sounding so great! I knew she could do it!! She just needed to warm up to the role. I just love her!! But for now I'll just have to wait for Friday morning to see her on Regis. She will be performing a solo from Gypsy, but I wonder which one? Rose's Turn? Some People? Just have to wait!
About her wiping her nose a few times...? Not sure what that meant. It could have been from the sweating or all that energy that goes with the role. I hope she isn't coming down with anything...

Theaterbaby,

Interesting question. I just looked it up and sure enough the eligibility is for shows that open May-April so technically since Gypsy opened on May 1st, I would say she is eligible this year. I sure hope she is nominated and wins. It would be great for this production and her phenomenal performance to be acknowledged now that all the "talk" from previews is well in the past.

Update:
Well I looked a little further on the website and sure enough they were deemed eligible last year. Too bad! Updated On: 1/13/04 at 04:54 PM

She'll probably sing "Some People" or "Everything's Coming Up Roses." I don't think she'd do "Rose's Turn" at 9AM and all of her other songs feature other actors such as John, Tammy or the ensemble.

I love "Some People." But my favorite is "Small World" and then "Rose's Turn."
