Gypsy - Her being 12 actually would probably mean that she'd enjoy "Gypsy" more, because "Mary Poppins" tends to attract 6-10 and middle-aged women the most. She'll love "Gypsy", unless you're family is some super-conservative Christian family. They say "damn" a lot, but there's nothing that's SO inappropriate, unless your family finds the idea of "stripping" (even though it's all done in a comedic way) inappropriate. You might want to explain what burlesque is before you go, and maybe (if she doesn't know already), what a "stage mom" is. It's a fabulous show and anyone of any age would enjoy it. I LOVED "Mary Poppins", but I think that your family would have a better time at "Gypsy". I also think that "Gypsy" is a better show.

I don't know... I'd say based on the tickets you already have that Mary Poppins is more the kind of show your family would want to see. On the other hand, since they are already seeing some big mega-musical-type shows, they might love to see Gypsy and a few Tony winning performances for a little bit of contrast - my personal choice would be Gypsy, but it's not everyone's taste.

They both are great shows, so either one is fine, but I would probably choose Mary Poppins.

I guess if your sister is 12, she might prefer Mary Poppins. But for anyone else - Gypsy is in a different class. No contest.

"In theater, the process of it is the experience. Everyone goes through the process, and everyone has the experience together. It doesn't last - only in people's memories and in their hearts. That's the beauty and sadness of it. But that's life - beauty and the sadness. And that is why theater is life." - Sherie Rene Scott

Gypsy is a better show, but Mary Poppins seems like a more family show. You should let your family listen to some songs.

I think musicaltheaterfan3 covered the bases very well. In terms of "adult content," your family won't see anything in Gypsy that they don't see on the most mild-mannered TV show.

It's a less obvious choice than Mary Poppins for a family with a 12-year-old, but if she enjoys theater (congrats, by the way, on having such a family!!!), she'll always remember that she saw a legendary performance.

Yeah, my thoughts too, Gypsy would make it a diverse selection based on the choices you've already made.

hmm..12 year old girl...ok, i STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT take her to see Young Frankenstein!! It is a Mel Brooks musical,so It is very very crude, a lot of cursing, and almost every scene has many references to sex that will make your parents wish they didnt take her to see it. In my opinion, it is worse than RENT. So please. don't take her to see Young Frankenstein. It is very inappropriate for anyone under high school age, in my opinion.

but definitely take her to see GYPSY. I've heard it is outstanding. I was going to see it, but there were no tickets available

I saw Gypsy twice with Tyne Daley and Bernadette Peters. I chose Mary Poppins as this was really fresh.

I have two daughters, ages 8 & 5. They were bored by Mary Poppins. The special effects are impressive, but the show lacks energy, and seemed to all of us to be about 6 hours long. Taking the energy and life out of the great songs from the movie wasn't easy, but they managed to do it. They've seen lots of shows, and this is at the bottom of their lists.

Go see Gypsy. It is fantastic.
