Wow, I was hoping for something a little more....exciting for the opener this year.
"You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" - Betty Parris to Abigail Williams in Arthur Miller's The Crucible
I guess, in the most positive view, it would be "hearkening back to the days when Richard Kiley would do an encore performance of The Impossible Dream on the Tonycast."
But seriously? They couldn't have done anything else?
"Y'know, I think Bertolt Brecht was rolling in his grave."
-Nellie McKay on the 2006 Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera, in which she played Polly Peachum
Blah. Not that the number isn't impressive, but does it have to be the opening number? I'd really prefer to see Whoopi do something.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
it must take someone really special to put on a lame awards show year after year after year after year...
you gotta admire consistency
"Picture "The View," with the wisecracking, sympathetic sweethearts of that ABC television show replaced by a panel of embittered, suffering or enraged Arab women" -the Times review of Black Eyed
I understand they want to keep ratings up, but this is sad. I'd rather see the slots that Rent and Lion King are filling up filled by some of the other shows such as Young Frankenstein, Little Mermaid, and A Catered Affair.
"We like to snark around here. Sometimes we actually talk about theater...but we try not to let that get in our way." - dramamama611
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."
-Kad
"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."
-bjh2114 (on Michael Riedel)
Richard Kiley did an encore of "The Impossible Dream" in the old Tony telecast which was a song from MAN OF LA MANCHA which starred Brian Stokes Mitchell in the latest revival who performed in the benefit concert CHILDREN AND ART in 2005 in which Whoopi Goldberg was also a participant who was the voice of Shenzi the Hyena in the film version of THE LION KING hence the Broadway production of THE LION KING opening the Tony Awards. It goes full circle. Circle of Life.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

It doesn't say anything about the originak cast of THE LION KING. DISNEY is greasing somebody's palm. They have said they will feature other shows besides the nominees, let's see what happens.
