I know it's early, but the same thread last year was truly, in my belief, a perfect way to remember the musicals this season, by which musicals flopped, disappointed, or suprisingly wowed. So lets begin by listing all the musicals eligible for Best musical next year:
Billy Elliot A Tale of Two Cities [title of show] Shrek 13
Am I missing any? Probably I am, just post them here, but from that, here's what I predict:
Billy Elliot will either be a complete smash hit with great reviews, a smash hit with ok reviews, or a smash hit with terrible reviews. This is almost the Wicked of the season, in being that no matter what, it will do great.
A Tale of Two Cities, if I remember correctly, did not get tremendously great reviews in Florida, but in my opinion has the potential to give Billy Elliot a run for it's Best Musical win. What's not to love about it? It's an old fashioned musical with sweeping scores, a classic plot, and an excelent design (if they keep Florida's excellent design).
[title of show] is undoubtedly the small off broadway show which does. Undoubtedly, it will be the surefire hit of the season. Hopefully it suprises everyone and wins.
Shrek better be the best damn thing we've ever seen, otherwise I'll loose all respect for this amazing cast and crew. With a little luck, I think it could be the next Lion King, otherwise, Dance of the Vampires.
13 could hit or flop, but the show is still one of the most ingenious ideas ever seen on a stage. Having kids perform this show, right down to the band, is a true testimony to the power of children in musical theatre. Amen, Amen.
Alright, with those in mind, I think the nominations come down to whether or not Cities and Shrek flop or succeed. Here's my expected nominations/ wins:
(If both are hits) Billy Elliot A Tale of Two Cities Shrek [title of show]-though this could be pushed back into a special performance category
(If Cities flops) Billy Elliot Shrek [title of show] 13
(If Shrek flops) Billy Elliot Tale of Two Cities [title of show] 13
In the end, I could see any of those shows winning, but Billy Elliot's Best Musical win could be traded off by having the choreography and lead actors win, leaving the two big spectacles, the off broadway show which could, and the testimony. Of course I'd like to see [title of show] win, but we'll see soon Please post for next year starting.... now!
Waaaay to early guys! Let's wait till at least the 1st half of new musicals open! We dont even know which shows will REALLY open. Let's try to make it to the 2008 TONYS AWARD first..and then the summer!
Here are all the productions planned for next season: whether they'll all get up is debatable.
[Title of Show] Billy Elliot Nerds Vanities A Tale of Two Cities 13 Shrek the Musical The Story of My Life Nice Work if You Can Get It 9 to 5: The Musical ACE Ever After Pure Country
As for my early predictions, I think Billy Elliot and Shrek have the best chance for a nomination as of now. Don't know enough about the others to make an educated ballot right now.
"Y'know, I think Bertolt Brecht was rolling in his grave."
-Nellie McKay on the 2006 Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera, in which she played Polly Peachum
Whoa, that's a long list of upcoming musicals, wonder how many will actually make it to Broadway this upcoming season.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Billy Elliot Shrek: The Musical 9 to 5: The Musical A Tale of Two Cities (If it can last)
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
Since it has been mentioned in two different categories: Nice Work If You Can Get It = Oh, Kay!
I think it's going to fall into the new musical category with an old score, like My One and Only (which began as a rewritten version of Funny Face) and Crazy for You (which began as a rewritten version of Girl Crazy).
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

If you hate it, TooDarnHot, then you don't have to predict. Or even open this thread. I'm throwing out my predictions which I should be entitled to without you attacking me for it. Thanks. Updated On: 5/26/08 at 12:28 PM
