I need some help, so I'm coming to you guys.

For my Tony party in June, I'm trying to come up with food I can serve to represent each show of the 07-08 season. It can be food that is actually part of the show (as long as it's somewhat integral and memorable) or it can be a food that embodies the show.

I've got the musicals figured out, but I need some help on the plays.

Here's what I have so far:
Musicals
GYPSY - chow mein
THE LITTLE MERMAID - shrimp cocktail
XANADU - Fresca
IN THE HEIGHTS - plantains
SUNDAY... - eclairs
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN - Yodels
PASSING STRANGE - "magic" brownies (because the show takes place in Amsterdam)
CRY-BABY - lollipops
A CATERED AFFAIR - wedding cake
SOUTH PACIFIC - Bloody Marys
GREASE - candy cigarettes

Plays
IS HE DEAD? - cocktail weiners (weiner dogs...get it?)
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY - candy pills
NOVEMBER - turkey
BOEING-BOEING - salted peanuts
THE HOMECOMING - cheese rolls
THE RITZ - fruit (my favorite)

Any suggestions? Think one of my choices above is lame?

Also, if you feel like spending a Sunday evening in Brooklyn with a bunch of theater nerds, let me know and I'll send you the details for my party.

Thanks, guys!

In The Heights should be just a bunch of Spanish food

Well, I know you already have something for The Homecoming, but I would use ice to represent that play. Lenny had an amazing line about having rocks but they were frozen stiff in the fridge or something.

How FUN!! I wish I knew people who threw Tony parties or would attend mine! re: Broadway-themed food (or, What Should I Serve at my Tony Party?)

So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

I'd like to serve food that people will actually eat, so I think I'm going to pass on the rotten seafood for TLM.

Yeah, I just wanted something Spanish for ITH, but I love plantains and my landlord made them all the time when I lived in Washington Heights, so I'm going with it. Maybe I'll do plantains with rice and beans or something.

I thought about egg rolls for GYPSY. They'd be easier to serve, but isn't chow mein a bigger part of the show? The dog is named after chow mein, it's Louise's birthday meal, and it's just mentioned more often.

Vote? Should I do chow mein or egg rolls for GYPSY?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys, keep them coming!

I like the idea of egg rolls for Gypsy better, just cause they are in the song. "have an eggroll, mr. goldstone"! Aww...now I want an egg roll!

Yo, ignorants -- IN THE HEIGHTS is Puerto Rican... which means Caribbean food, such as white rice, black beans and plantains as principal side dishes.

Spain (as in Europe) equates to 'Spanish' food, such as paella, tapas, etc.

HUGE difference. Learn them if you plan to expand your horizons and educate your palattes.

Oy!

Even I know the difference between Texas barbeque and southern barbeque.

Brody, you're right. I was being lazy and used a generic, incorrect term. I apologize.

Isn't in the heights based around a dominican family?

If it's Washington Heights it's Dominican primarily. East Harlem is Puerto Rican (although increasingly less so)

Not really, there are characters from the Dominican Republic but there are many others from other countries.

Oh, just do the piraguas. The food that has a song and a reprise in the show - you can't go wrong.

Cry-baby... you could set out tear jerker candies or something with onions. Or you could make pie like the dancing one in the show... The rest of your ideas were awesome!

I was going to serve a hunk of beefcake for XANADU, but I don't think people would get it.

I haven't seen CRY-BABY, but a friend of mine who has seen it multiple times said that the best character sucks on a lollipop the whole time and that I should serve lollipops. Either that or apple pie. But lollipops are easier to eat at a party.

I haven't seen IN THE HEIGHTS, either. If there is a song or two dedicated to piraguas, then I'll go with piraguas. I'll make plantains for myself some other time.

Thanks for the help! What about some of the other plays?

Yo, no it's not! There are a few Puerto Rican characters, but the whole show isn't Puerto Rican.

Go with the piraguas. If for no other reason than the fact that they're really good. re: Broadway-themed food (or, What Should I Serve at my Tony Party?)

as for ITH: it's a mix of Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban. yay.

I agree with everyone else, Piragua would be the most fitting.
