I found out recently that my family and I are going to be going to Ny in august. This will be my second time visiting Ny (i saw Jersey Boys, Les Mis, The Color Purple and Grey Gardens last time I was there). It was great having all your advice in choosing the shows last time and I would like some opinions this time.
Because my whole family is going - I need to pick 2 shows that the entire family can see. I was thinking: A Chorus Line... thoughts? Either The Lion King or The Little Mermaid... which one is better? or maybe convince them to see In The Heights (I will see it on my own regardless but.. do you think it would be a good family show?
For the shows for just myself, I was thinking... In The Heights Gypsy South Pacific Spring Awakening .. are those good picks?
and just some questions: 01) For the Lion King - I was looking at the 51$ tickets.. is that really that far back in the theatre? would you guys recommend sitting closer? 02) Is there any chance Sunday in The Park With George will extend to august? 03) Out of all the shows I was thinking of... is there any that it is a "must" to be sitting up close? are some better to be seen further back?
I actually think the further back the better, for ITH.
I was in row D of the front mezzanine and was so glad I did that. I could really see all the amazing dancing and everything going on -- there are a few sequences that involve many people at different levels.
Try an off-Broadway show if you can. Always fun. "Adding Machine" was just extended through the summer. Spring Awakening is good. (I saw it off Broadway) And between Mermaid and Lion King, I would go with The Lion King. Mermaid was good but Lion King is the better of the 2 in my opinion.
For me, The Little Mermaid doesn't even come close to the wonder that THE LION KING is ! Lion King is an inventive, spectacular, fantastic show ! Little Mermaid is great for Disneyworld, but I couldn't help but wonder what's that doing on a THEATER stage !! And ALL your 4 choices for yourself are WONDERFUL picks !!!
in the heights is definitely a good family show. My parents both loved it.

Gypsy and South Pacific are great, definitely see them. Why not take your family to see them too. They're both classics! Even if you have young siblings theres nothing that isn't family friendly in them. Either way these two shows are must sees! Updated On: 4/24/08 at 10:58 PM
your own reccomondations are good for the family and if you want to see wicked for the mid mezz or rear mezz for wicked for the cheap seats that will be great view because you see everything from up there. i loved both the lion king and the little mermaid. both different stories and all. more enjoyable for me was the lion king and it was even wonderful to see it with my dad. if you are a student try a student rush show.
Little Mermaid Gypsy- Amazing Cast. Lion King - Further back the better. You get the entire set and lighting design. Its amazingly stunning.
For you:
Spring Awakening- Everyone should see it atleast once. Its Amazing. Its Young, Beautiful and refreshing. A Must See.
Altar Boyz - ALot of people dont know about it when visiting the city but its a great fun show. Only 90 mins no intermission. Cheaper seats. and Well worth your money and time.
Cry-Baby - haven't seen it but ive heard amazing things and i will be seeing it next week.
By the way if you do want to see South Pacific (that may be a good family choice as well) get your tickets NOW, it's selling out FAST.
