If one seceeds, one LEAVES the union. Onr cannot leave the union to become a new state of said union.

I like having 50 states. It's a nice round number. They should have to wait until there are 5 new states that will join simultaneously. It'll save the flag-makers effort.

California should be split into about 3 states. After that's done, THEN Long Island can separate itself.
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

I remember learning that when Texas was annexed and achieved statehood, it was also granted explicit authorization to subdivide into up to 5 states at any time, as long as the legislature approved the new boundaries. Maybe if Long Island creates an odd number of states in the country, Texas can split up a bit to give us a nice round number again.

Long Island would be seceding from the state, not from the union.

They should have to wait until there are 5 new states that will join simultaneously. It'll save the flag-makers effort.

Actually, a flag for a 51-state union would be pretty easy: three rows of nine stars, alternating with three rows of eight stars. Wikipedia claims that the United States Army Institute of Heraldry has already designed U.S. flags for up to 56 states, but I could not confirm this on the Institute's website itself. (Which isn't to say it isn't true.)

Maybe if Long Island creates an odd number of states in the country, Texas can split up a bit to give us a nice round number again.

And what's so good about round numbers?

I wasn't concerned about the flag design, but that it will cause a trend in "new" states and we'll end up having to buy these new design every year or two to accommodate them.
