I saw Spring Awakening for the first time yesterday at the 7:00 show. Let me just say, I was incredibly pleasantly surprised. I saw it on stage and didn't really miss anything other than a few facial expressions. I'm just going to post a few of my comments, maybe a few questions, and share some pictures before I delete this frivolous thread in a day or so.
First of all, how can one cast be so beautiful? Every single person on that stage shined like crazy and they are all just adorable.
Matt Doyle was on for Hanschen and he was just sensational. What an amazing voice. From listening to the Bare recording, I knew that he was phenomenal so seeing that he was actually going to be playing a role tonight, I was ecstatic!!
Lea was also out and her understudy, Eryn Murman, was on. She. Was. Fabulous. I was so happy to be able to see her. She was so fresh and seemed to connect so well to Wendla. Such a sweetie and an amazing performer.
The show was astonishing. All the numbers were genius and seemed to fit perfectly. I'm not going to go song by song or scene by scene because I don't have much time. But, really, all the scenes were just fabulously thought up.
My favorite was Kristine Nielsen as the Older Women. She was HYSTERICAL. Her comic timing was spot on. She had me in hysterics.

[IMG] I just thought I'd post this because as I was taking this picture, my friend, Sasha, fell right on top of Matt. It was HYSTERICAL.

[IMG] My friend and I decided to be creep shows and ask the cast to take pictures with us. Here's the most of them.
The whole cast came out so I got my full playbill signed, it just that there was like..a MOB there so I didn't want to take up all the time with pics. Stage door time was an hour 'cause my friend was obsessed with Jonathan and wouldn't leave until we met him. (Yeah, she's the 19 year old.)
awww awesome review and pics! Thanks for sharing! I love hearing about peoples "virgin Spring Awakening experiences", because there really IS nothing like seeing this show for the first time.
and *sigh* why are Groff and Matt both so adorable and purty? (and is it wierd that the first thing I thought was "oh hey! Groff's got a new hat. cool"? LOL)
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
I was sitting next to a girl who saw the show 326 times. I really wasn't aware that people see shows that many times!
good god. And I thought I was obsessed with the show, and I've only seen it twice!! ahaha. Although, it would be higher if I lived around the city, but still, not THAT high

Awesome review. I know when I went, I had such an amazing experience that I will never forget. I saw Matt as Melchior and he was amazing. Also, Jesse Swenson is a GREAT Hanschen. :) Man, Lea Michelle. 20 shows out this year? Thats a lot.
Eh, I liked Alexandra Socha. She was good. :) I am *hopefully* going to be seeing the show again this weekend. :)
"Yea... that's Joanne. She sees the show every day. "
Is that the same girl they keep talking about in the Legally Blonde Rush Drama thread of hell?
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
tgn, I found this quote from you on another thread (before you saw it): "I wouldn't have seen the show if it weren't for the on-stage seats..I don't like the music too much but I don't wanna not see it at all." Heh! Let this be a lesson to you! :)
I think you'd love it from ANY seats. I love sitting on-stage too, but even if you technically don't "miss" much, you don't get the full effect. Those seats are considered partial-view for a reason. When I finally saw it from out front, I was blown away by the lighting, the sound, the staging, etc. You don't see the whole thing when you are in the middle of it.
I've been going to SA off and on for over a year, and the last time I went over half the cast were understudies, including Melchior (Swenson) and Wendla (Socha). But it was even fresher and better than ever...I daresay some of the replacements/understudies are better than the originals, and seem better able to swing into various roles. Amazing (and yes, gorgeous) group. (Last time, I was excited to have the seat next to Groff, but he was out, but Jesse Swenson just stole my heart til I was like, "Groff Who"?)

hehe, I almost kind of WOULDN'T want to sit in the seat next to Groff simply because it would be so damn distracting! :P I'd just be all fangirly and jittery the whole time instead of enjoying the full effect of the show! Plus, you know, he has one of my favorite voices ever, so him singing in my ear would ensure that I wouldn't be listening to ANYTHING else lol

^haha, he DOES spit a LOT, it's true. Thought I feel like the worst place to be would be more in FRONT of him (like in the front row) rather than sitting NEXT to him. Next to him, it seems like it'd be pretty safe
seriously though, the boy can spit! It's a good thing he's talented, sweet, and adorbale enough to make up for it
