According to ATC

-Patti's new wig is great
-The Faux rape is still gone (they didn't answer about the SW Reprise)
- Still using stuffed chowsie and lamb
- Apparently 'Rose's Turn' and the ending are totally different now.

I feel super dumb, but what/where is the faux rape scene? Is it usually in productions?

The faux rape takes place right before MR. GOLDSTONE. You can see it in both film versions. It's a very funny moment.

OH!! That one. OK. I thought there was some big dramatic moment involving Louise and a strange man that was almost rape, but not really.

I know exactly what you mean now, thank you.

It's a comic scene in the hotel where Rose is confronted by Mr. Kringelein, the hotel manager. He's trying to get her to pay her bill. As a distraction, she brings him into her bedroom, throws him on the bed, attacks him with a lot of objects, and then dishevels her clothing and runs into the hall claiming to the other hotel guests that Kringelein tried to rape her. "Again?" Herbie asks.

It's usually in productions.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Too bad the rape scene is gone, it's always hilarious.
So how have they changed Rose's Turn and the ending? I'm quite curious.

So, here's the rundown of the dress last night:

The show is in great shape, and they have 3 weeks to fine tune it even more. It's book is very prominent in the show, so once cues and transitions are picked up a little more it should flow much better.

Her wig looks great, indeed, Chowsie is stuffed and a guy still operates the lamb.

Small World Reprise is cut as well.

The orchestra sounded great, I believe I counted 22 players.

Laurents made a funny and charming speech before it started, he's very excited about the production and was grateful he has been able to bring it to Broadway.

The main differences I noticed were the characterizations of the three leads, each one of them has gotten a new layer for their character that's pretty noticeable if you saw the Encores production.

As for the ending, they have changed the ending, it's not HUGE but it does make a slight difference in tone for the show as a whole.

If anyone wants to know, PM me.

Also, thank god they recast Opel, the new Mazeppa makes the three strippers stand out even more. Updated On: 3/2/08 at 02:10 PM

That new mazeppa is the brilliant Lenora Nemetz. She's also covering Patti. Can't wait to see HER as Rose!!!

Well judging from Patti's history I doubt she'd give Ms. Nemetz a chance to go on! I don't think Patti will be missing performances... after all this is "Patti LuPone Gypsy."

Is the dressing room scene still the same? I'll never forget Benanti's chilling "I SAID TURN IT OFF!!!!"
I wonder how "different" is the different ending.

It's good to be back to the message board after a two month absence.

I have 2 questions about this production of GYPSY:
Is this an open run or a limited run? If it is a limited run, when is the closing performance? The broadway box discount offer is good only to April 20th.

Is the orchestra on stage or in the pit?

Orchestra is on stage.
I'm 99% sure it's an open-ended run but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The run is open ended.

Individual tickets are currently on sale through October 5th, while group tickets are on sale through March 28th of next year.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

With regard to the fake lamb, I wanted to add this. Years ago, I knew someone who worked on the Tyne Daly "Gypsy." They had a live little lamb for the show, and it was driving the production team crazy. First of all, lambs grow so quickly that they kept having to replace it every few weeks. With the lamb always new, it was almost impossible to get it trained for the stage. And then, toilet training them was a nightmare! They'd bring it outside before the scene it was in but sometimes there'd be onstage "accidents." While I'd rather see a real lamb up there, I can fully understand why they're using a puppet.

Shaw Festival used a real lamb in their production 2 summers ago, and it tendede to bleat all through "Little Lamb" (both times I saw it) drawing laughs but killing the moment. Stuffed may be athe way to go. After all...we KNOW we are watching a play!

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I used to play with the lambs before each show in the most recent revival...I used to have so much fun. The cutest little animals.

One of the lambs used to follow one of the staff members around the house before the show. So cute.

I can't picture a stuffed lamb (it seems lame), but there's nothing worse than a lamp spazzing out during "Little Lamb." It's so distracting.
