Shows just hope that there will be enough people willing to pay the premium prices for the premium seats. But, as the curtain time gets closer, and the premium seats dont look like they'll be sold, they will be marked down to the regular 111.00 (or whatever) price. And sometimes, they'll even go to a discounted price. That's why sometimes the premium tix can be a gamble, just like the lotto/rush. If you wait til the last time, they may give u some cheap premium seats. But, if you wait til the last minute, you might find all the premium seats gone too.
Unless I have a specific show and date I need to go to, I usually buy tickets two or three days before a show and almost always get ex-premium seats at a discount. The only shows this year I have had to pay regular price for ex-premium seats are Spamalot and Young Frankenstein.
I have actually paid the premium price a couple of times but was unwilling to do so for YF given the mixed views on this board. Glad to get such good seat ORCHESTRA (B109/10) with only a couple of weeks to go.

I've seen plenty of people buy premium tickets (sadly), so it doesn't mean an end to the shocking prices. I doubt it will happen anytime soon, but Mel should knock down his top price ticket a couple of hundred bucks. I bet more wealthier tourists would buy a premium seat for $250. If I was rich, I don't even think I'd get the $450 premium seats.
P.S. Has anyone ever actually seen someone at YF with a $350/450 ticket in hand?
