If there was one show this season that could turn into a Drowsy Chaperone or Spelling Bee like hit that really comes out of nowhere, which would it be.
Yes, but sometimes people have a third deeper layer thats the same as the first. Like pie. Dr. Horrible
I don't think we have "sleeper hits" anymore, it is either a financial bonanza or disaster. Having said that, maybe CURTAINS is a sleeper in the old sense, that is a show that runs and pays it's way week to week without it ever really being a constant sell out.
i don't know that I would call Xanadu a sleeper hit, although I'm suprised it's still open. It's box office numbers are awful. Although it's not a sleeper in the sense that it's been pretty highly publicized, I think August: Osage County is doing much better than anyone expected. They've already extended their run through mid-april, and it's possible they might extend it even further if ticket sales remain up. It's generated more excitement for a straight play than we've seen in a while.

I'd go with CRY-BABY. I mean, PASSING STRANGE has 'buzz' but I don't see it really "achieving" much outside of anything and everything the original B'way cast does with it ... You can't replace Stew, 'nuff said. IN THE HEIGHTS? Well, I mean, that has a pre-determined fanbase as is - from the run at 37 Arts, etc., etc. I think A CATERED AFFAIR will do good business, heavy on 'word-of-mouth' and the cast list will probably do good business for the show, too, but I think CRY-BABY will turn out to be the sleeper hit of the season!
