I find it boring...what cracks me up is I can still hear the average guy or woman say "What is Patti Lupone Gypsy?" At least put a small "in" before Gypsy...because to me it reads like one word. If I was not a theater person I wouldn't know the difference...since I am a theater person, I do.
I wish there was some picture or something....

It really does like awful from close up. Very plain, and that fuzzy look on the lettering - (where lights SHOULD be)
I dont know, I just have a hard time trying to imagine it as the final work. I understand that it could be the final artwork, but they COULD place lights where the letters are now.
It just looks like a 3-year old could tear it right down.
Looks like cheap wallpaper.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Drowsy Chaperone marquee matte like that through most of the previews and possibly into the run before the flashy lit up one premiered?
Nothing's permanent.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, you could always look right across the street at the "Cat...." marquee !!

Well, you're right-ish..."Drowsy" started previews in April 2006 with a "matte" marquee, but they weren't exactly quick about putting up a new one. The fancy lighted marquee didn't go up until Thanksgiving of that year, around the time the show recouped its original investment (which it did amazingly quickly, I thought). So it seems that the matte marquee wasn't so much a "fill-in" as it was the only feasible option until finances allowed for lights. Don't look for the producers of "Gypsy" to upgrade the marquee a few weeks into the run just because this one seems shoddy. Most likely it's here to stay.
EDIT: Yeah, you got it. I still say 6 months is a long time, and likely an exception to the rule anyway since most shows don't upgrade marquees like "Drowsy" did.

It looks like a bad combo of the Company revival and the the Chorus Line revival.
Oh well. I still want to see it, but I wish it had more sparkle to it.

I have seen this show 3 times with 3 Gypsys
If & when it turns up on TDF I may see it again.
Someone mentioned Drowsy. I walked by the theater yesterday. All signs of it are gone but there is still a large picture of Bob Saget in the window. I have no idea why.

Yeah, this marquee doesn't seem like "Gypsy" to me at all, but you can't judge a show by it's marquee. I thought the "Tarzan" marquee was cool and well... didn't care for the show... at all really.
But anyway. It seems to me like the producers aren't putting TONS of money into the show, and probably for good reason. Don't get me wrong, I love Patti and LOVE "Gypsy" and wish this production all the best, but this show DID just have a revival, and as much as I loved that production, in my opinion it didn't do THAT well... As excited as I am about this show, I'm not expecting it to stick around too long. I hope I'm wrong though. I've wanted to see Patti in the role for some time now. Best of luck!

Posted: 1/27/08 at 6:33pmIt has been well-publicized that Arthur Laurents was very dissatisfied with the Peters production and didn't want that to be people's lasting impression of the show. Since he's 90 (or very close to it) and LuPone is no spring chicken either, the thinking might have been let's do it before it's too late. But having seen it last year at Encores!, I can vouch that it's no rushed job -- LuPone sings it better than anyone since Merman.

I was actually really suprised how shabbily the signs were posted, it's not smoothly done at all. That's why it strikes me they might be temporary, to have something up since the box office opens this weekend. Whether the artwork will change on the permanent signage, I dunno.
I will tell you that Friday and yesterday, I saw a lot of interest at people looking up, and I saw at least couple of people try to buy tickets, so I guess it doesn't really matter how the sign looks.

When I saw it while walking down 44th st, it looked as if it was all one word.
I do agree with Dr. Theatre that I can see someone reading this as one word.

Thanks Winston89...all I am saying is that there is no real difference to knowing the star to the title of the show. Patti Lupone is much bigger than the title and I just feel that the average tourist will see that the title is one word or that Patti Lupone is the name of the show....I just wish they made it different to show the difference between star and show! And I think this is hard, because they are both title stars in their own right!

Posted: 1/27/08 at 11:08pmSadly, this marquee and the poster we saw on Broadway.com (also formatted for the show's website) are probably permanent, but then again, maybe not. It's interesting to note that Playbill does not have artwork from the production yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that means something else is coming soon to replace what we've seen.
