Favorite 80s Song?#1
Posted: 1/21/08 at 12:29pm
Last night VH1 was repeating "Top 100 songs from the 1980s". I don't know who voted, but the Top 5 were not the best of the 80s. I know, I was there.

What should the Top 5 songs from the 80s be?

Do you have a link to the list?

Not best, but favorites that come to mind. Though I think some of the best music from the eighties came from some of the less popular bands like Nina Hagen, The Waitresses, The Motels, The Dead Kennedys, etc.

Take on Me - Ah HA
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
I confess - General Public
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
Come on Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
With or Without you - U2

Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

"I haven't left this building since Windows 3.1!"

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

VH1's Top 5 were:

1. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
2. Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard
3. Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
4. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
5. When Doves Cry - Prince

My memory is that while Billie Jean was big because of the Moonwalk, Thriller was bigger because of how cool the video was.

I know, it's hard to imagine I have a top 5 of the 80's with no Cure, New Order, Eurythmics, Pretenders, or Clash on it. I guess it wasn't that bad of a decade for music after all.

Scott took mine. As far as I'm concerned, "Don't Stop Believin'" is the definitive '80s song.

I remember seeing VH1's special back in August, seeing that they put Livin' On A Prayer" at the top andbeing really annoyed. Maybe that's just because I hate Bon Jovi. Then again, i wasn't really alive for the '80s, so...
"I can't figure out what kind of life this is, comedy or tragedy, I just know it's showbiz. And what if I don't agree with the lines I have to read? They don't pay me enough, the way I see it."

Lest anyone forget, the 80s also brought us the artistry of Paula Abdul and Bobby Brown.

Have y'all heard her new song? It's surprisingly not bad, in an electronic-Britney-esque way.

I wasn't feeling the song. It was just the blurb on TMZ, right? Is there a full version?

Actually, other than 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' I like the VH-1 choices.

'Thriller' is a better Michael Jackson song.

And I'd put in 'On the Metro' from Berlin, just because 'On the Metro' RULES.

Unfortunately, the list doesn't include any women. Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Bonnie Tyler, The Bangles. Couldn't they find one woman?

I have so many, but off the top of my head:

Walking on Sunshine-Katrina and the Waves
Don't You Want Me-Human League
Love is Alright Tonight-Rick Springfield
King of Pain-the Police
Hungry Like the Wolf-Duran Duran
Total Eclipse of the Heart-Bonnie Tyler
Holiday-Madonna
Money For Nothing-Dire Straits
The Breakup Song-Greg Kihn Band
Let's Go Crazy-Prince and the Revolution
Eyes Without a Face-Billy Idol
It's the End of the World-REM
Billie Jean-Michael Jackson

Geez, I could go on and on. I'm an 80s nut.

OH and the best video of the 80s is "When The Rain Begins to Fall" by Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora.
