'Meanest mom on planet' sells son's car

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."
After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone -- by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

Go, Mom!

If sonny boy is 19, he's old enough to buy his own car, anyway.

That's not resposible, it's stupid. He's 19, there's very few places in the world where 19 year olds are not allowed to drink. There are people out there getting away with proper crimes, gun crime, theft, things so much worse than drinking, and she sells his car? How does that merit congratulations?

I'm not with you on this one.

vm,

Get a clue.

Did you read the story? She only had TWO RULES; No Liquor, and Keep It Locked. She found liquor in the car.

She did the right thing.

I know SOMMS, that's why I threw in the comment about there being few places where such laws exist. Thanks anyway.

" He's 19, there's very few places in the world where 19 year olds are not allowed to drink."

Well, in this country the age is 21. And there was alcohol in THE CAR, which most likely means that that is where he was drinking it (possibly putting others at risk while driving). Even if it was a passenger drinking it (who was most likely also underage), he was told when given the car that in order to keep it, alcohol was off limits. It's not that much to ask. He's lucky his parents bought him a car in the first place. I don't feel sorry for him. I got a kick out of the story.

And there are greater tragedies than a 19 year old not having a car.

I must agree blueroses.

And I'd rather not be told to get a clue. Please don't talk down to me. I'm sorry, i didn't see the part about the two rules. I did follow the link, and read most.

Good for that parent!

In 2006, an estimated 17,602 people died in alcohol-related traffic crashesan average of one every 30 minutes.

VM, I'd say that's a pretty bad thing. And I'll bet that every mother, father, sister, brother, friend, grandparent, aunt, uncle and cousin of anyone who has been hurt or killed by an alcohol-related accident would agree.

Not to worry. Sorry if I was out of place.

I was just coming from my point of view, whether it's wrong or not. I'm 16 years old. I don't drink, I never have, and I've decided that I never will. If I wanted to, however, I could, no problem. My friends all drink, and it irritates me. Seeing 15 and 16 year olds drunk is not funny. Having to clean up after them is even less fun.

Furthermore, I come from a family which hass been affected by alcahol problems at various different times, so I know what it feels like from both ends.

I'm just saying that I've seen people my age fall apart on drugs, hurt themsleves, do awful things. And I've seen them drunk, and I'd much sooner have them pissed than high. That said, most of my friends can't drive yet, so that may not be relevant then.

Apologies.

You need to find some new friends.

And with all of that 'experience', do you still think what the mother has done is wrong, or do you think she's being too hard?

I don't know, even reading my own posts I think, why on earth, having said all that, wouldn't you agree? But call me a hypocrite, but my immediate reaction was "That's a little draconian".

I'm not advocating drink driving, or alcholism, I just for some reason didn't think it was the right course of action. However, I hadn't seen that the mother's rules were about no alcohol.

I'll take that 'draconian' parenting over this tragedy any day.

edited to add: as long as it makes you stop and think, VM, that's a good thing... re: Finally, A Responsible Parent!

As a parent of a 20 year-old driver, plus another turning 17 soon, I agree completely with this parent's actions.

I agree with the mother also. Especially in this day and age, where it seems like there are very few parents who will even utter the word "no" to their children.

If the big, grown up 19 year old wants a car, he can go buy one. Then his mommy can't take it away.
No good can possibly come from using this vast wasteland of error and deliberate deceit. You should get off of it and warn others away. You should make sure your children and grandchildren know what a corrupt and morally bankrupt institution it truly is.

Or the ones who scream, "My child would NEVER do that!"

That's the reason this story made me happy!

I love those parents who have perfect children who never do anything wrong and everyone just puts the blame on them "for no reason!" puh-leeze.
